I'm taking the plunge, got I hope a good "barefoot trimmer" coming out to give my a horse a full consultation and then its shoes off!!! Feel quite nervous but excited too sad eh!!!

lol, welcome to the barefoot brigade! We can get a bit anoraky at times - wait till you get into a room full, all talking feet :D

What led to the decision to remove the shoes? I'm a nosy so and so ;-)
Hope it all goes smoothly, you must keep us updated.

Good luck.

It's normal to be excited once you've made the decision to remove the shoes.

There's plenty of stuff to read on the net for more info to arm yourself with.

Don't be afraid of using boots as a transitional tool.

thank you, always wanted to do it with my old mare but was never brave enough. A friend of mine took her horses shoes off about six years ago and never looked back! New boy arrives - very funny with his feet being touched spent hours with him getting him okay with it the farrier arrived and he had a complete melt down even though my farrier was brilliant with him! I just don't see the point in putting him through that even though I know one day he'll probably get used to being shod but what's the point when I want to try the world of barefoot-ness anyway, sorry going off on one!! Whether that's a reason or not I'm not sure!

I think thats a great reason!!! Most horses & owners discover barefoot as a last resort to fixing an ongoing problem and sadly it's considered an alternative to surgery for navicular... so I think just doing it because you want to and can see the benefits is refreshing and brilliant.

Theres lots of advice on here, just do a search on barefoot. Have you got the HOG or any of Pete Ramey's books or Nic Barkers Feet First. You probably have but just in case, they are very interesting.

WooHoo!
Welcome!
I love not having to rely on a farrier (i learnt to trim myself)
My horses are excellent in all ways being barefoot and I am very smug at shows when i watch people painfully screwing studs in and my boy skips round the course never slipping in his bare feeties!
He had terrible feet too until I took the plunge and removed his shoes - he's feet are rock solid now and i've never looked back! I still hack in boots though as we do clock up the miles on the road and i find he wares his feet down too quickly (we dont have any offroad hacking unfortunately)
