Shoes on for winter and off for summer?

Very annoyed that I will be putting shoes on my ISH this Friday :( he had all four taken off 2 1/2 years ago and never looked back, hacking for up to 10 hours , hunting full days and going xc without shoes. He's developed cracks and chips over the summer and now has a crack that's gone in to the sole of the foot and is spreading every time a stone or bit of gravel gets lodged in so now he's got to have shoes on or he will be in light work all winter with no hunting while his hoof is carefully managed and grows back- which is not really an good option. Is it ok to put shoes on for the winter then whip them off again for the spring and summer? as he mostly works on fields or on a surface during the summer so doesn't really need them, and can cope out hacking without shoes. irritating thing is that 3 out of 4 hooves are great, it's just his right front so thinking he can just have fronts on. I've not had a shod horse for a while, should I ask for road nails for hunting?

Thanks!
