My new horse is only shod on the front. Im going to be doing mainly hacking (mostly on roads, the roads are pretty good snd smooth/not stoney) and some school work.
Will she be ok to be kept with just shoes on the front?

I would ask your farrier.

My youngster is shod front only and we have now started more road work. I too was concerned her feet won't cope but farrier says she is fine. He will put them on if/when her feet don't cope with the level of road work.

my farrier has said there is no reason to just shoe in front unless a youngster having remedial shoeing..

just get a set put on all round then you wont have to worry, will you?

My three have been front only for several years. I even hunted my old girl weekly with no hinds. People kept telling me I had lost a shoe! They have all been fine, so it's saved me a lot of money. My farrier said 'why bother if they don't need it?' I felt that for hunting, they could possibly slip a little more without shoes on hard ground, but for wetter going and roadwork, shoeless was equally good/better.

Both mine are only shod in front, one has never had hinds on and the other used to but is semi retired now. Never had any problems with either of them, but I am careful on stony tracks/roads. Saved me a fortune over the years.

all of ours are only shod in front, I may add backs to the TB this winter when the ground freezez but it has saved me loads of money with the blacksmith and vets bills as if they squabble they don't get so badly hurt.

Lots I know in fairly heavy work have fronts only on. Keep a dialogue with your farrier and watch out that the hinds aren't wearing down too much if you do lots of road work.

A lot depends upon the breed. TBs have notoriously bad feet, native ponies normally quite hard feet that don't need shoes.

I take the view that if the horse doesn't need shoes then why bother. If it needs them put them on, either fronts only or all round. I hate all this barefoot idealism, it should be about what is best for the horse.

my youngster only has fronts on and thats only because he wasnt happy on th estones. So i decided that he needed fronts. If he needs backs i will put them on but as many have said check with your farrier- they are qualified to know best

Our young one was unshod when we got him and fine...but we have a stonier yard/track then where he lived before and went a bit footy.

Farrier said to just try fronts at first and see how he went...he's been fine like that so far.

Trust your farrier.....

When my TB had shoes on I only had his fronts done as he didn't need them on the back so if I was to get a full set I would be throwing money away. I would ask your farrier and see what he thinks.

I have had fronts on two of mine over the summer (have not been able to do much as had strangles at the yard) but i am now going to try keep it that way through the winter to save a bit of money.
Both been fine and one's a tb
