I keep toying with the idea of taking my boys shoes off and seeing how he goes barefooted having known a friend of a friend that has done it very successfully to a horse that she hunts and competes regularly - what are people's views on this? Has anyone else done it successfully? Or has it been a complete disaster?

If (it is a big if) the owner can offer appropriate control over turnout/feed/exercise then I would go shoeless. If (as if often the case esp on livery yards when owners don't have the control that would be useful as regards grazing and surfaces) this isn't possible, and the horse is sore on removal of shoes then unless this could be remedied through diet and careful exercise then shoes on.
