Shogun as a tow vehicle?

We have found a Mitsubishi SW 3.2 109.000 miles 2003 as a possible replacement for our trusty Fourtrak that keeps overheating

Does anyone tow with the above and what are your impressions?

To be used with a Bateson Deauville and one horse.

What questions should be asked?

I love my Shogun! I have an IW510 and have towed it with 2 big horses (16.2hds+ hunters) and never missed a beat. It's as hard as nails, I abuse it on a daily basis and it's been treated this way since I bought it in 2008.

When she dies, i'm getting another!
 
No personal experience as I don't do the towing!
My o/h has a shogun at work and we always used to borrow it to tow when he didn't have a 4x4 and it was brilliant. Even towed pony and trailer to the vets on a very snowy morning once (obviously not something I'd recommend but proof they are good towing vehicles)

Any service records ? if its manual has it had a clutch /flywheel( this is expensive!!) EGR cooler and valve can give trouble, Road tax price a friend has a car version and its £425 ouch I know people with them and like them for towing and day to day use, if you change oil , coolant and transmision fluid regulaly they seem to be very reliable..

First is swb this newer one is lwb and a shogun sport but i definately think the swb tows nicer.

We pull IW505 and car trailers round with ours and they both are great.

Do you have a friendly mechanic you can take with you?

This one is an AUTOMATIC , I have not driven an automatic

Does this give me a problem when towing, round tight hilly bends in what would have been second gear?

(and also, the road tax is not a problem as we are abroad.thank you)

I tow with a SWB Shogun Auto around North Devon which is very hilly and bendy. It's a dream to tow with. Mine has a tiptronic gearbox and so I use the gears on the steep hills. I'm not sure if all Shogun's have this but it sure saves on the brake's :)
Having said that...towing in automatic is no problem at all...

Tax would be fine on a 2003 as you only pay a maximum of £270 (approx) on anything older than 2006. I prefer a manual to an automatic, less strain on the brakes and auto gearbox. Saying that, I used to have an old Pajero auto and it towed an IW510 with 2 big horses easily. It was also very reliable despite being ancient. Miles better than a Land Rover. As long as you can bear the fuel economy, go for it.
 
I had a brand new one while my Discovery was in to be mended ( someone hit the side of mine) I hated it . Big, clumsy and the horses did not like I when I towed with it.

I was so glad to get mine back.

As for Automatic against Manual ,I prefer an Automatic it gives a better ride for the horses and much better in traffic
 
I am watching this thread with interest as considering changing from L200 to swb Shogun. Most used ones seem to be automatic and I have never towed with an auto, didn't even know if it was possible. :)
 
I've had 2 shoguns. I Love my Shogun for towing,...I have a V6 3litre swb and have had both manual and auto and find towing a pleasure with automatic. It's never given me a minute's trouble and i'm confident that my car is up to the job when carrying my precious cargo behind me down busy motorways etc,.

Can be heavy on the juice but i'd rather have a car that safely does the job and drinks a bit!

Mines 15 years old now and still going strong.

DOES IT HAVE ADJUSTABLE HEADLIGHTS, does anyone know,

it will be used abroad, or will we need to buy a new set (and best place in uk for spares ? )?

I have a 2005 lwb automatic and I actually said to my friend who I share my trailer with that when I tow with it it makes the huge fuel bills from my daily commute all seem worthwhile! Lol I love it we have an ifor 505 and two cobs who way around about 500kg each.

I would think it will have headlamp leveling so you can adjust them for carrying different loads in the back but they will still dip to the left hopefully You should get away with the stick on headlight converters as I guess a pair of lights wont be cheap!! you could try milner conversions in matlock they have a huge range of parts for japanese 4x4s...

We are going ahead,with the purchase, having done the test drive earlier.
