I am thinking of buying a Shogun to tow and an Ifor Williams trailer. I want to know if the rear door of the Shogun will open fully when coupled up to the trailer as I take a rather large mounting block with me when I take my horse anywhere. Any advice would be most welcome.

Yes the rear boot door does open fully.
I do find though that the jockey door bangs against the rear door.
So it if windy and the boot door is up and i let the jockey door go, i have had a loud bangI
I usually only have one doors open at a time now!

Hi, I know this is quite an old thread but i currently have a pathfinder and looking to upgrade to a Shogun for towing my Ifor 510 trailer. I also was worried about the back door opening when hitched up, but other posters have set my mind at rest. one thing i wanted to ask, the one I am looking at has no tow bar so i would need to arrange to get one fitted, does everyone have the regular tow hitch or the swan neck version ?
the Swan neck appears to give a little more space behind vehicle?

I couldn't open the door on my 1997 Shogun, it was one of the main reasons for getting rid of it as I had a hell of a job retrieving my saddle every time we went out.

Interesting, I had a 2002 shogun and a Richardson trailer and I could only open my back door to less than halfway as it used to catch on the jockey wheel. There was enough space to get my saddle in and out and my ikea mounting block but nothing much bigger.

yes, this is why i am a little confused with the conflicting reports, the one we looked at was the LWB Shogun elegance 2011 model.

i guess the only thing i can do is measure the door length when open and check the clearance distance to trailer ??

I wonder if it depends on which towbar is fitted? Both my yr2000 and yr2014 Shoguns have a fixed towball, and it it does protrude out from the rear a bit. Maybe the detachable types are neater and don't stick out as much?

Not got a hitched up photo, sorry, but this shows my towbar/hitch design.

Thank you Tiddlypom, that really helps :-) i think if we decide to buy the shogun - as we will need to fit a towbar anyway I can ask for the extension or spacer to be added for a bit extra room behind. makes more sense seeing it in a photo

am really liking Shoguns, but just wanted to be sure before we commit

alternative is get a lorry but OH doesn't seem to think that is an option... ..LOL

Glad to help :). I've just looked it up, it's a 'fixed flange ball tow bar' which was supplied and fitted by the Mitsubishi main dealer that we bought the Shogun from.

It's not exactly beautiful, but it's safe, strong and practical, much like a Shogun, really :D. The choice of tow ball heights is very useful, the lower setting suits the 510 very well.
