I am thinking of getting a 4WD to tow a trailer. I would be towing an Ifor Williams 2 horse trailer, mostly with 1 big cob. I don't want a huge tank of a vehicle and have seen a few 3 door Mitsubishi Shoguns around. I have also seen some that say Pajero but I understand that they are imports and can be hard to insure?? I have tried a couple of on line (major company) insurance web sites and they won't give a quote for the Pajero. If I end up with an import any ideas on where how to insure it??

Anyway, I just want to know a bit about them, what they are like for towing, how reliable are they, anything I should look out for if getting one. My budget isn't huge so it would certainly be second hand! It looks like one of the smallest, but chunky, 4WD around and capable of doing a job rather than just dropping the kids at school!!!!
I assume it's not affected by the tax thing??

i have a lwb pajero. no probs with insurance. if they are registered before the end of 2000 i think you are ok for tax. mine is a 2000 and i was charged normal tax. only problem i have is very very juicy. cost me £550 + last month in diesel. saying that it tows like a dream i have an ifor 510 . this was my only car so i have to use it all the time. have now got a small car and will use this just for towing but will have to re think as this is not financially the right way to do it.

Is it best to get a diesel?? I understand diesels are less juicy??? It would prob be my every day car just don't think I could stretch to running 2 cars somehow!! oh to win the lottery!!!

yes, mine is a diesel auto. it does have a big 2.8 engine but i am only getting about 18 miles to the gallon. i would think a swb would give you more mile but i was putting £50 in every other day. i had no choice but to get another. i will probably be getting rid very soon. i will be looking at the L200 or navara pick up and put a proper colour metal back on then they are just like a 4wd. my brother has one and is getting 31 miles to the gallon at least. it is diesel and auto.

yes i have a 2.5 swb diesel pajero which is the same as shogun but is an import and have had no problems with insurance. I had mine now for atleast 4 years and tow with it most weekends with a 15.3 and a pony in with no problems at all. Yes it can be a little bit juicy but that could have something to do with being a automatic, i find that it gives the horses a lovely smooth ride, the only draw back i find is the lack of boot space but have never had a days problem with it and also comfortable to drive as i have to use it as my main car as well.

Don't want a big 4WD as it would be an everyday car as well as for towing, assume most are gas guzzlers, but any other recommendations for a SMALL and reliable 4WD gratefully received.

Also I like the look of the Shogun!

Otherwise it would be a Suziki Vitara or a Toyota Rav 4 but until I actually get my act together and go to some garages and try them out don't know what will suit, but I just think the Shogun looks like it can do a job where as the others look more like a family car. As for boot space I currently have a mini so anything will be big to me after that!!

I don't think the Rav4 or the Vitara are suitable for towing. The Rav 4 has a tow weight of 1500 and the Vitara about 1800. The SWB Shogun is around 1800 and the LWB is 3500.

I've just bought a long wheel based Pajero for towing an Ifor 510, and it is doing its job brilliantly. I also use it for everyday, and although more thirsty than my Peugoet 306 diesel, is ok. I didn't have any trouble insuring it (Churchill), you just have to have an immobiliser to insure for theft. I used to have an Izuzu Trooper for towing and that was also great (LWB) - more of a workhorse than the Pajero, but I used it everyday and was perfectly adequate, even on long journeys.

I have the Shogun LWB 2.8 which is very similar to the Pajero. I will be changing it shortly though and I have been looking at a newer Pajero as these have so many extras. I fill up once every 3-4 weeks and it costs me £60-70 a full tank. The fuel gauge is very dogdy and so I always fill up when it says about 390-400 on the clock depending on how much towing I`ve done, but it isn`t a lot of difference.
I use mine to take the kids to school, go to the yard twice a day, (2.5 miles away) and for shopping etc.
