I'm looking for rubber bit guards specifically with a cross cut in the centre of them for easier putting on -they need to go on a Cheltenham gag and I haven't got a hope of getting the plain ones on

(And yes, I have taken the gag cheeks off lol! )

I tried the ones with a cross on my 3 ring gag and found that they were rubbish. It might just have been my boy's ridiculously fleshy lips but I found they just oozed through the cross and got pinched even more than with nothing. I found the smallest holed ones I could in the end and put them in water as hot as I could handle to encourage them to stretch. It can be done!

Wouldn't have thought they were that difficult to find, but I probably still have the ones I couldn't use somewhere if you want them...unless I cut them off, I tend to do things like that and not remember!

Annagain - if you still have them, it would be fabulous! I've just been speaking to my local saddlers who have been asking their suppliers for me - apparently they have gone out of production due to lack of demand, so unless I can find an old set somewhere, I'll be struggling to find any

He has a set already on his other gag - a cherry roller Cheltenham gag - and they work very well - the main problem we have with him, is that he wears a kienton noseband and it is more the pressure of the 2 - the bit and the noseband - that i am trying to offset, rather than the bit itself rubbing. The bit has an eggbut mouthpiece, so doesn't rub like a loose ring gag would.

(he is quite strong....!!)

I used to loop some bailer twine through the hole and over a bridle hook, loop another piece of twine through the hole and around my foot, then you can stretch the hole of the guard pretty big. Alternatively, horse health sell some gel bit guards which are easy to get on.

Thanks annagain -I've pmd you

The Robinsons ones are exactly what I was looking for -yet aagain HHO comes up trumps!

The gel ones (how much??!!) wouldn't go over the rings -they're about 4" in diameter :-)
