I'm looking for an exercise rug for my 17 year old. He's being fully clipped this year and as we do loads of hacking I dont want him to get cold. ( I treat this little guy like a king. The yo thinks I'm nuts....) Anything under €50 please! Thanks in advance!

To keep a horse warm on especially cold days, I really like the traditional, wool, newmarket exercise rugs. You can usually find them second hand (eg ebay) for good prices.

Otherwise I like V-bandz exercise rugs for hacking out. I do have various other kinds but the V-bandz get the most use (mesh one for warm weather and then swap for the waterproof one for the rest of the year, pop the wool one on too when it's crazy cold).

Thank you! Will definitely look into those. I like the look of the V-Bandz ones. Are they easy to get on and off or do you have to take the whole saddle of to adjust/remove them?

Slightly over budget but I love my Rambo fleece one:

For me everything just works really well about it. It's cut really well so fits properly around the saddle, doesn't pull back or rub or flap etc etc. and the fleece is breathable and wicks and if it rains the water sits on the top without going through to the horse.

I've got the yellow one so that I hope it helps with visibility too.

I have a Thermatex type one from Swish, they don't seem to have them on the website any more (it was in the sale when I bought last year) - but if you can find one second hand I'm well impressed with mine.

The bottom two attachments are velcro straps around the girth, so easy enough to undo and take off. The top two attachments go around the girth straps and have plastic side release clips, so generally need the girth at least loosened to get the clip under.

I really like that they have a little strap at the top of the tailpiece for clipping a bike light to.

Unless there's a pressing reason to do a full clip, a blanket clip would keep him warm without needing a rug
I would prefer to blanket clip him but it just wouldn't be fair in his level of work unfortunately as he turns into a woolly mammoth ? every winter and he's in quite heavy work (eventing and hunting)

Thanks. I didn't notice the strap for the light! I like them even more now!

I like the cut on those ones. I'll have a good think about it. Still have plenty of time to decide luckily!

I also bought one in a sale a few years ago - they are great! Sad to hear they don't do them anymore

Weatherbeeta Thermic Exercise Sheets are brilliant. I use it on my old boy who's in a similar situation to yours. Have been using it for the last 5 + years and it's lasted brilliantly. It's similar to thermatex material, breaths and wicks away brilliantly. I like the shape and cut, it covers well and stays put. I've got the rambo striped sheet for my other horse, I really like it and especially the cut but I'd choose the weatherbeeta every time. They're about £50 but you could probably shop around and find one a touch cheaper.

LOVE the weatherbeeta. What are the sizes like? Do they run especially big or small or are they true to size? Not gonna clip for a while so will save up a bit more?

Long time ago I bought it, I think it's pretty true to size but on the generous side, it's quite deep. Definitely worth saving for, it's fantastic and even having had a lot of use it still looks smart!

I have the Mark Todd Hi Viz with fleece lining, around £35 or cheaper if you shop around, excellent for hacking or schooling. It's a wraparound one so you can put it on and take it off without adjusting the saddle.
I also have a personalised Eqco Doesitall (their version on Thermatex) quarter sheet, for warmups at competitions. It was about £60 inc embroidery.
