I'm currently looking to buy my first horse, haven't found "the one" just yet but I'm hoping it won't be long.

As it will be my first I have virtually no kit at all, so I'm trying to make a shopping list.

One list of things that I can buy now and store, things that I don't need to know precise sizes for.

Another list of things that I need to buy ASAP as soon as I find the horse and know what sizes etc to get (I'm thinking rugs here).

It will be kept part livery and I need to check whether I have to buy wheelbarrows and forks or whether the yard provide these.

So I'd appreciate you help with the shopping lists!

Thanks

Katt

Don't ask me, I have one of absolutely everything (with and without a neck lol).
High viz exercise sheet.

Thanks, have got a decent grooming kit already - one of the few things I actually have!!!! Only because brushes are as rare as rocking horse poo at the RS, and I compete on their horses.

We've also got a pair of stirrup leathers (hubby is very tall and has his own pair that are long enough as they aren't always on RS horses) and a pair of reins (for competing).

What do you think we should get in terms of first aid kit?

Do you think that just getting full sized headcollars is a safe bet?

We're pretty sorted for warm and waterproof gear, although I think I'll need a couple of pairs of joddies.

Aha! That is the sort of thing I haven't a clue about - the first aid type stuff...... will add that little lot to my list! Cheers!

At this rate the kit will cost more than the horse!

If you go to a vet, they often have a vet kit ready made up. I bought one and it proved useful as a starter.

Yes, full-sized, they'll cover everything from a cob to a warmblood

Unless it is a big warmblood lol.

You'll find that you will need odds and sods as you go along

. We went through about two years when we practically lived in the local saddlers, but now we're just in and out for carrots and clipper oil lol.

Depending on your foot size, as compared to your OH's, you might need two pairs of stirrup irons
