Howdy :))

Strange question coming your way!

Ehem......why do horses eat the short hard to get grass, when a few feet away there is lush green long grass?

Poo picking today and my boy seems happy munching away at the shortest patch of the field Yet when we go down the bottem. He's got loads of long grass that he's used for a toilet! Not one poo in the short dead ish stuff, poo city in the long stuff! ( impressive to get out too)

So yes. Please enlighten me? Lol

The shorter grass is sweeter, and therefore they prefer it to the not so sweet longer grass.
But also....would YOU eat out of your toilet? I wouldn't! :D

Well, the long grass is long because horses will not eat where they have pooed (unless really hungry/starving, of course), and they are also selective, what is termed "lawn grazers" which means that they will consistently eat only the grass varieties they like, leaving the rank grasses to grow so that you get short cropped "lawns" and rough scutch grass in patches.
