Shortening Manes

I'm thinking of showing my pony next weekend and I've tried to shorten her mane a little to tidy it up using a Solo comb - except I've not made a very good job of it. Can anyone suggest a better gadget which might tidy it up for me? I've been looking on the internet and found things called mane and tail rakes or maybe a Mane Master but I'm not sure.
 
I've tried but she really doesn't like it. As she is only 2 she isn't broken yet so I can't give her a ride first to warm her up to make it easier.
 
Yes I agree pulling always looks better, just do a bit every day so you dont make her sore and by the weekend it should look great!!

I use a Solo Comb (which i hate!!!) to get rid of some of the length and i use a Tail Rake to thin it out/take some more length off.
If it still doesn't look pulled i pinch the ends which seems to make it look a little more pulled.
 
Thank's for all the suggestions. As I've still got one week, I'm going to just pull it a little each day and hope that by next Sunday it is good enough!
