As the title say's really after seeing another dog on course that could have caused a nasty accident with the dog lead!!

What are every body's thought's..
 
Just saw that incident and knew the yearly thread would start! ;)

I personally think there should be a rule that if you can't control your dog you have to leave. May make people who take their dogs think a bit harder about whether they can actually control them and would their dog cope with the event.

I take my boy to events and never had a problem. He is on a short lead and headcollar and doesn't react to people or horses.
 
I think so- Especially as people still seem incapable of holding onto them properly!
I was at Blenheim last year when a terrier took off yapping after a horse on the xc course :(
 
Yes because it's been shown again and again that people can't be trusted to keep their dogs under control - sad but true.

That was way too close to a serious accident for my liking.
 
No, they shouldn't be banned but maybe those who do lose control should face a fine. They shouldn't be asked to leave in my opinion. I don't think the majority who have a great day out with their dogs should be punished for the behaviour of the minority. That wad probably worse because it had the blooming flexi lead still on!!
 
Sadly I think they should. Whilst the vast majority of dogs are very well behaved and their owners act responsibly you will always get the nutjob with a dog that insists on yapping every time it sees a horse or gets loose and has a wonderful time chasing them down. Once again the it's the idiots who spoil it for everyone else.
 
I'd charge £30 per dog which would make people think seriously before bringing them. All dogs to be inspected at the entrance to ensure they have a suitable collar and (non-extendable) lead. Then i'd provide a number of free dog creches, water points etc. If your dog does get loose you get thrown out
 
I think that's wrong to charge people to bring them in. There are thousands of people spectating at these events and many go because they are family and dig friendly. Most places say you will be fined if your dog is loose. I think they just need to toughen up on that rule.
 
But its not just loose dogs. Dogs lunging and barking at horses going past should be reprimanded too. If they are not asked to leave then it could easily happen again later in the day.
 
I'm a dog lover but, yes if they can't be controlled owners should be asked to leave. Was at ballindensk horse trials in cork and a dog caused a runout on the xcountry.

How do you actually fine anyone without the law behind you? You would have to take them to court if they wouldn't pay. Not economic.

Its too late after a horse has fallen because of a dog in any case.
 
The horse trials stables I have been to often have signage stating £10/£20 fine if your dog is loose. I am not aware of this ever being followed through though! I think it would he sad if dogs were banned. At bramham horse trials there are several dog related things going on as well - agility etc. I find it ads to the enjoyment. Maybe though that's because I have never had dogs who have any inclination to chase or bark at horses.
 
... Maybe out of control dogs could be 'confiscated' for the day and then the owners charged to get them back? :-)
 
It would be almost impossible to police or enforce fines, bans etc. There are just too many people. I have dogs but would never take them to an event. They live with horses but would find all those people and dogs way too exciting so would misbehave. It would spoil my day, that of those around me and potentially ruin someones round.
 
But that gives the owners a get out clause that if the dog misbehaves they will still be able to enjoy their day so it doesn't really matter.
 
Andrew seemed quite appreciative - apparently it's good for Avebury's concentration... So maybe not ;)
 
I love my dogs but I would never generally take them to a big event. We did once take our dogs to brigstock but they were very good on the lead, it is very local to us and we only went for a couple of hours so they weren't bored and likely to misbehave. I don't really understand why people want to take their dogs as there are so many people even with the best behaved dog I don't think you can totally relax.
 
Its not just loose dogs, its dogs barking and yapping. Sadly I think they should ban them and I know that will penalise the vast majority who have well behaved dogs but there are a lot of idiots out there and they are going to cause an accident.

yes i do think dogs should be banned from big events the dog that with the lead that got under andrew nicholson was small and couldnt have been overly strong to get away from its owner, its the irresponsible owners who cannot control their dogs who ruin it for everyone else
 
3years ago I took my dog with us as my mum who minds him when I am away was away herself, I would not do it again. He was not having a happy time, too many crowds, he got snapped at several times by naughty other dogs, and of course he was on the lead all day. So yes dogs should not be allowed at these big 3 and 4 star events. He goes with us to smaller events when we go competing with the horses, but then he is happy to sit in the lorry or be tied up at the back of it underneath lorry.

I thought I read those expanding leads were not allowed anyway, just imagine if it had got wrapped round that horses legs!!!
 
Yes without a doubt. I wouldnt take any dog of mine to a horse event. They have all been crate trained and the nieghbour could have let them out as we did it for hers so they wouldnt be in all day.

I think its highly inrresponsible to take your pets to events like this and ealk round the XC course. I mean how the hell would you feel if your dog caused irreprable damage to one of these competitors, horses or human? And how would you pay for that damage should they sue you? For the sake of taking your dog a walk? Really?

Well if the worst did happen that's what dog insurance with public liability is for ;)

I'll be taking my dog to Bramham for the first time this year, he'll be wearing a gentle leader along with a harness with two leads as a belt and braces approach, he's a big strong dog and I want control, and options if one fails, no flexi lead either (i dont think they make one robust enough anyway lol) I've no doubt he'll love it as he loves people, dogs, and hoovering food whenever he can :rolleyes:

I won't take him if its Sahara hot or peeing down, and my oh can stop by and pick him up if he gets tired/fed up at any point, benefit of being a local :)
