If you charge you may be getting into the realms of requiring insurance and leaving yourself open to legal problems in the event of an accident or fall out.
Personally I wouldn't charge, or take payment in kind. If she is going well I would use it as experiance and make a good friend instead!
i will maybe broach the subject of even getting a discount on your livery for your help and time one good turn deserves another and it has got to work both ways
I have to say I wouldn't charge. I have been asked to do this (and have done it) in the past - not so much because I know what I'm doing, because i don't, but because I have a confidence giving pony, and because I've been there and I know what it's like to lose confidence. I enjoy helping people boost their confidence
The way I see it, what goes around, comes around. I've had some fantastic people help me out with horses - without the help and support I've received I probably wouldn't even own a horse of my own. So I'm happy to give up a bit of time to help others out
plus if you charge you'll probably need insurance as it will be a more formal arrangement
The idea of subsidised rent is a good one but sadly wont work... she isnt the Yard owner.. only the manager so doesnt really have the authority to reduce the rent for my horse.
In terms of turn out and get in "favours" in return it wouldnt really help me.. i like doing it myself and dont need it regularly... that doesnt leave me much in the payment in kind box does it!
i can see what your saying about insturance issues aswell... hadnt really thought about the legal side of stuff...

If I were you, to see your 'pupil' regaining her experience and enjoying her riding would be reward enough. I am sure if she is a decent human being she will be totting up what you are doing for her and will be indebted to you forever.
You could always say you feel you have done all you can and feel a qualified riding instructor could continue where you leave off and that you just dont feel up to teaching her any further.
Someone I know, who wasn't a friend, helped me when my confidence was lost. She became a good friend and although I offered to pay her she flatly refused saying to see me riding my boy and enjoying him was payment enough. I bought her some pressies along the way and flowers, which she accepted although she made it very clear she most definitely did not do it for any other reason than getting me back to where I had used to be.
So, in answer to your question, I wouldn't ask for payment.
I agree with Bex.
Even if you don't need help regularly, there's no harm in having someone available to do you a few favours on the odd occassion you do need it.
