Should I be forking out on a new saddle?

As some of you may know, I have just bought a 'project' horse. I bought a expensive brand new saddle for a different horse and have tried it on my newbie and IMO I think it fits (not on a livery yard so not like I can ask others their opinion!)

I phoned the saddle fitter up and to come out here to check it fits 100%, it's going to be £65 - would you call him out? (my only worry is, obviously he'll want me to buy a saddle off him, so he might not be *totally* truthful) Or I could get a freelance instructor/trainer round and ask for their opinion?

I do personally think it fits but would you have it checked by a saddle fitter? My project horse in question is a sensitive mare prone to bucking.

I would definitely have a saddler out to check the fit. If your project is prone to bucking then it would be nice to eliminate the saddle as one of the causes of bad behaviour.

£65 isn't a lot for piece of mind I reckon

I would definately get it checked. Ask around to find a trusted fitter in your area. If you think it fits then they may just be able to twek it if it is not quite right. At the end of the day £65 is a lot better than the vet/physio bills if you are wrong!

I'd get the saddle fitter out as thats what he trained to do. The instructer has trained to teach you to ride not fit saddles so IMO i wouldnt completely trust them. He may speak to you about a new saddle if your other doesnt fit but that will be because he has to put the horses health first. But at the end of the day if your one fits then you've only got the call out fee, he wont charge you any more.

I would get the saddle fitter out and say that you would like to know if this saddle fit now and that when she changes shape and needs a new saddle you will call the same saddle fitter back. That way they are more likely to be honest knowing that they will get the order when and if you need to change.

Just a thought.

I personally would fit it myself (although I'm quite good at fitting saddles) and use a decent pad if the horse was to sell on. If it want still bucking then I'd think about the saddler. I'm not saying thats what you should do just what I do. Having worked at a few decent showjuping and eventing yards you'd be surpised how many have 'one saddle fits all' rule which surpised me as a few of them had decent sponsership with some very decent tack makers.

I'd do it myself tbh, but then I am confident checking the fit. Specially if is just a seller on....

Which saddler is it out of interest?
