I have noticed that my new boy sometimes has a leaky 'tail'..... when I put him in his stable, he will sometimes hang it partly out and let wee drip out of it. It only comes out very slowly, maybe one drip every minute or two, but when I have left him in for a while, I can see a few drips on the stable floor.

Is this anything to worry about? I am wondering if he may have an infection, or is finding it painful to wee, so maybe he is trying to hold it in?

I have also noticed that when he does wee, it is massive, like he has been saving it up!

Should I be doing anything about it, or is this relatively normal??

Sorry for the slightly "eugh" nature of this email.
 
I had a tb who had a constant drip like that an it was just him. Get it checked out then if vet can't find anything dont stress
 
You mentioned that when he does urinate there seems to be a large volume.

Is he stables on matting only, or does he have plenty of bedding to stale onto? Many horses don't like to stale onto a hard surface where the urine can splansh onto their legs.

I would probably contact a vet for advice, even if it wasn't a call out/consultation, incontinence isn't normal for horses, and he may have an irritated bladder, or urinary tract infection.
 
Lol, I hope so Amymay. Would be worse if it really was his tail!

I would speak to your vet about it if its something that you have only just noticed.

All horses should have a continous flow and not small amounts of stop/start.

It may actually not be massive amount....may be a normal amount, but seems big. But, he may have problems with wee retention which may show up as this.

No, not normal if you're noticing a leakage as stated, he may be continuously retaining some urine and not emptying correctly.

Also, are you sure it's wee - could it be another bodily substance? Puss? Just a thought.

Sorry about the confusion - tbh I picked up the use of the word 'tail' from my friend years ago, I thought it was weird when I first heard it, but have somehow picked it up - is easier to call it that in front of the kids at the yard!

I will talk to the vet and see what she says. I am not sure if it is normal for him as I have only had him for a few weeks. It does not look like puss, but I have not done any tests (not even a sniff test) to check that it actually is wee. He is in a stable with shavings so it he does have something soft to wee on.
Tonks - yes, his big wee may be a normal amount for him, but it seems to last twice as long as my other boy's!

Why can't you use the word 'penis' in front of the kids at the yard:confused:
 
I didn't mean this thread to turn into this, so apologies. My email would filter any use of words such as penis, and I wasn't sure of the filters on this forum, hence I used the word 'tail' in my post.

I also use it in front of the kids as 'penis' would not normally be my first choice of word for it, the two words for it that come much more naturally to me are not particularly appropriate!

First thought that came to me was also wether there was a bean that was affecting him? Tbh a call to the vet won't cost you anything, see what they say and go from there
 
My horse does this but leaks more and then goes into retention - he's got a huge bladder stone according to the vet, he felt it through rectal exam! He goes through months of being fine though :) apparently only answer is surgery but he's nothing other than a lawn mower so decided to leave him as he's not in pain or anything.
