Hi, Fellow horse & hounders :)

just a quick question as I'm starting to worry, I bought a 2yo traditional cob just over a month ago who seems to urinate a hell of a lot, he lives out 24/7 but comes in from 4 till 6 ish for some love & attention :)

out in the field i cant tell how much he drinks as there is others in the same field, but when he comes in he drinks a lot.. when he urinates he doesn't do the stance that most other horses do which i find slightly odd, he just stands normal like he does when grazing..

in the 2 to 3 hours he's in he urinates up to 7 times..

opinions please? do i need a vet?

I wouldn't be overly worried. I am constantly amazed how much my grass kept horses wee. I turned my mare back out after a ride and watched her wee three times in ten minutes and it wasn't a wee "wee" lol. They all do it and are not ill.

I would ask the vet about him not going into wee stance mode, that sounds a bit strange.

I'd be worried. Get a sample of his urine checked by the vet in the first instance. He may have a bladder infection, or a kidney issue. Call your vet TODAY and tell them you will bring them a sample in a clean jar. They can dip it and test for protein, blood, concentration etc very quickly - even a vet nurse can do that. Then you'll have more of an idea of what you are dealing with. But what you describe is definitely not normal.

I dont think you should be unduly worried if your horse is thriving and fine in every other way, ie. eating, drinking, coat fine, membranes pink etc, but i do agree with Lardcruiser, this needs investigated asap so if you get a sample today, in a clean, well rinsed container get it straight off to the vets for a urinalysis which will highlight any problems like infection

I'd contact the vet to be on the safe side. Agree with Landcruiser that a sample test would be a good idea. I agree with FfionWinnie though that grass kept horses do seem to wee more - I used to ride my friend's horses who lived out and if ever one of them had to be stabled fur some reason, he would SOAK his bed, almost as if he was getting his own back for bringing them in ;)

I'm sure it's nothing with your youngster - just best to get him checked.

It is how my old pony was a couple of years ago, he peed almost as soon as he drank and it was so clear it looked like pure water, he didn't stretch out either, he was losing weight as well due to this, for mine was part of his symptoms of cushings but it took a few weeks to get the kidneys to stop working overtime, I would get the vet, he will want a sample if you can get one it may be worth popping it in before the visit to save you possibly having to wait for a diagnosis.

Don't worry until you know you have something to be worried about....and you do that by recognising there's a potential problem, which you have....and getting it sorted...which is what you should now do. I wouldn't actually do a urine sample...I would just call the vet and ask them when they are next due in the area and could they pop in and see you then to give him a full look over. Urine tests are ok, but they don't cover everything, so I'd not be immediately worried, but I'd want a vet to give a once over within the next week or so.

I always think that it is best to go with your instinct and with children and animals, if you think something is unusual, it worth checking it out. I'd ring your vet.

I wouldn't worry that he is weeing a lot (though 7 times is very excessive), as the grass is very wet atm and they are taking in a lot of water just eating. But I would be concerned that the excessive weeing is combined with excessive drinking. So yes, I would definitely get the vet just to make sure.

Youre right they dont cover everything,Few tests do, but with these symptoms its a test the vet would do,and it can rule out a good few things, so to take the sample in gets the ball rolling, especially if the op is worried, the test is also quick so may alay some of the op's fears when they get results, or give the vet a heads up on what to look for if any levels are out. So id deffo take one in.

Yep, I get that. Impossible for me given where my vet is and due to my hours so seeing it with a bias I guess. I'd certainly get a urine test...I'd just get the vet out as well. If OP can get urine to vet then yes...as you say, could be a great way to get the ball rolling.
