Sometime between 6pm Friday night and 10 am Saturday morning, someone cut the chain which secured the lock to my gate with bolt cutters to get into my field.
My field and stables are on a part of a lane which is blocked off by gates to stop the lane from being a rat run by cars from one village to the other. It's private access only if you want to drive down it and only me, a farmer and some allotment holders have the keys to the access gates.
The criminals also broke into the allotment area and destroyed some crops that were growing, broke into a shed and nicked a shovel. What worried me though, is that they also cut the lock off to the private access gates.
What is worrying me is that they didn't actually take or mess about with anything at my field and didn't even attempt to break into my flimsy tack room door (of which there is nothing of value in it anyways, only everyday stuff like feed, grooming stuff, 1st aid kit, mucking out stuff, etc. All my tack is kept at home.
Now the last time my tack room got broken into, they just hopped over the gate to my field (which is easy to do as I've done it when I don't have my keys and just want to check on the horses) and targeted my tack room.
I'm worried that by cutting the access gates to my part of the lane and then cutting the chain off my gate and not bothering about the tack room or any other sheds (of which only contain old feed bags, bags of rusty nails and a broken boiler!!), that they were coming for the horses but got disturbed.
There are no plaits in their manes but to be safe, I've moved them further up the lane into my friend's field for the time being but they can't stay there permanently.
Have I got cause for worry or do you think they were just being yobs and breaking into things for the sake of it? Who the heck steals mucky allotmeteer's shovel??!!
I reported it to the police as my other friend's caravan in her field down the lane from me, got broken into Friday afternoon. They said as no one saw them and there is no CCTV (no electricity down my field) that they can't do anything. One of my other friends who keeps her pony at a yard on the lane, saw travellers on the lane that afternoon and rang the police as they were hanging around but by the time the police got there, they had left. (Admin: I am not being racist here, just reporting what had been seen by others in my area at the time of the incidents).
I don't drive and there are very few livery yards in my area for me to move to. The ones I can afford, don't take kids and the ones that take kid's, I can't afford!!
Should I stay put and see what happens or sell my kidneys on the black market (or become a high class prossie! LOL!) and move to the one yard that takes kids?? It's quite a bit more expensive and you have to buy your hay and shavings from them which are ALOT more expensive than what I currently pay.
