Have seen a lovely young mare and know her entire history with very nice family. Problem is she is only four and i have not ridden for long time. The idea is to put my son(very experienced rider) on until i feel ready. She has a very calm sweet nature and has been very good to break. What do you think?

I dont find the age/experience thing an issue as long as you are aware of it. I started back riding on my 4yr old stallion after 5 yrs off with a broken back and everything has been fine, if she's quiet natured and treated well I dont see why there should be a problem. At least then you wont be buying something that already has problems!

Aslong as youve got experienced and confident people around you to help im sure there wont be any probs aslong as u remember youngsters can be unpredictable..although from what you say she sounds quite a laid back mare which is good..

Ditto whats been said so far, go for it if you know her history and have got some help if you get stuck or nervous.

Good luck

Thanks . I am hoping its the nature of the horse that counts and not the age. I have bought several from dealers and hate not knowing any history . Suppose there is only one way to find out.

Thankfully i have the best help in the world. A yard full of competition riders who are all very kind and will look after me and the mare, couldn't wish to be any where better . Am very excited about it all .

fingers crossed for you, you'll find it so much more rewarding watching her do things for the first time, i know i do!! ;-)

If you think you may feel nervous, you could try riding with a back protector on (probably not a bad idea however you feel!) it may give you a kind of mental 'crutch' which we all need from time to time. But I would go for it, it sounds like a very good situation all round, good luck and enjoy her.

thanks i do have a body protector but feel a bit restricted when wearing it but you are right it may be wise at first. I feel very positive after all these encouraging comments. thanks everyone
