Hi everyone I have been reviewing my horse feed. my horses is on a equestrian mix 13% protein she gets a scoop at night and she also gets half a scoop of pink mash. My horse is a wb she is 13 she gets a haylage morning and night not a lot because the yard owner is crazy when it comes to haylage. She is a good doer but is currently at a perfect weight. I was considering changing to cool and easy mix since it’s a only 10 percent protein. My question is dos 13 percent protein be to much for a good doer . Would it be healthier to change to a different mix.

When you say not a lot haylage, how much do you think she gets roughly?

What work load is she in, and what is her turn out/ grass like?

She gets ridden 5 days a week for a hour . It medium pile of haylage she gets it in the night and morning. But I don’t believe she is getting a lot in the morning and she gets out to summer paddock for 3 hours.

I'd drop the mix and add a big bucket of hay replacer morning and evening. 3 hours turnout and very restricted haylage is asking for trouble and a very miserable life for them

Are you and Dusty123 the same person?
Anyway she needs ad-lib forage so she never runs out. Why is she only getting 3 hours turnout? You don't say what the equestrian mix is but most mixes are rubbish. Something like fast fibre would be better.

I agree that getting more fibre into her currently is the priority. Hopefully the new yard can provide this? If not, I too would be looking at hay replacers. Grass nuts/ fast fibre / hay cobs etc etc. Anything like that.
