I have a 2002 51 plate disco auto TD5 with 130k on the clock, i love it, however recently i have spent quite a lot of money on it. New turbo, brakes and now an intermittet electrical fault, ggrrrrrr

I have VERY nearly finished paying for it just 2 payments to go, original plan was to keep it for another 2 years or so but have to say i'm losing confidence with it a bit especially as electrical fault causes car to stop!! even when towing 2 big horses up a big hill in the middle of nowhere! NOT good.

My OH is a car dealer and he has an X trail in now which hew wants me to try, but the issue i have is IF i go to the X trail i willhave a LOT less towing capacity and i really enjoy going to comps with my friend and her horsey. Both horses and trailer are about 2T.

So do i battle on with the Disco or do i consider a change be it x trail or other, poss Kia Sorento????? any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for long post tea and cake to those who got this far :-)

We had a Kia Sorrento up until last week when my dad got a newer 4x4.
It was fab for towing, great in the snow and economical to run!
I'd have another one tomorrow!

Get a different Disco maybe?
I know there is a couple of year plates you should avoid like the plague, but other than that, they are generally monsters than run until they fall apart!

From experience i would get rid!! Ive got a 2000 TD5 which i wish i had gotten rid of after 3 years. It now breaks down every 3 months without fail & at the minute i have to borrow a car to tow the trailer with a 14hh pony in because the disco wont pull it!! Cant sell it because it is knackered & the OH wants to run it to its death as he's spent over £7000 (could have actually bought another!!) on repairs to it in the 5 years we've had it! I am sure it will die for good pretty soon! (im hoping anyway!) I think you may regret it if you keep it xx

Mines 17 years old- drives like a dream, tows ace....looks like a shed and admittedly has had some welding done- but my mechanic has advised me to hang onto it for now.

A 51 plate Disco would be a step up for me:D

The older ones are fab!! I had a 1990 plate for years & it never broke down. Someone smashed into it & wrote it off so i got the (rubbish) TD5.

I think your 17yr old one would be a step up for me lol!!:D:D:D

Mine is the same as yours and the OH has been waiting for it to go wrong since the day we got it (were bullied into it by my dad as it's one of his cast-offs). But, touch wood, it's been really good, we've had no major problems with it at all. It now needs a new clutch, but what else would you expect from a car that has done lots of heavy towing (it tows hay and machinery far more often than it tows my ponies)?

However, the one my dad bought to replace it, which had had one owner before him (ours has had about six owners), had done less miles than ours and was three years newer was nothing but trouble. It bro*e down in Devon when they went on holiday and they had to have it towed bac*, the final straw was when the gear box went (auto) and Dad put it though the auctions.
