I have never had to clip before so would appreciate some help please! Gils winter coat is coming through but still has a way to go before he becomes the wooly winter monster! I lunged him this morning for 15/20 mins, nothing strenuous (sp?) just walk, trot and a canter on each rein. When we had finished he was steaming and his neck and between his front legs were sweaty and wet. When I have hacked him (walk and trot) he has been the same plus sweaty under his saddle. So am I right in thinking I should clip him? And if I was to what clip should I give him? He is only in light work, we mainly hack and school maybe twice a week atm. I was thinking maybe neck and belly clip? Then I could see how he was with it and if he was still sweating up badly then I could take some more off? As you can see very novice at this so help appreciated, Thank you!

Yes a neck and belly sounds about right, you could start with a bib clip if you wanted and then clip more if you needed to

Will you be clipping yourself or getting someone in? Is he wintering out or stabled at night? Do you have rugs to compendate for any hair you remove????............. If wintering out or near as damn it then you want to remove as little as possible hence a bib would be the better option. A bib is also very easy to do yourself as opposed to a trace which requires not only being able to do straight lines but also matching up to the same level on both sides!! If you are rugging/stabling etc then you can afford to take a little more off. Have a look at chasers they take a diagonal line from the stifle up to either the jowl or the ear, depending on how high you want to go on the neck.

Noooo I will be finding/hiring somebody to do it, I made a right mess of his mane when I pulled it and can't even cut my own fringe straight so definitely won't be doing it myself lol. He is out in the day as long as it isn't constant rain and stabled overnight. If his neck was clipped would I need to have rugs with necks for overnight and turnout? Would one of those snuggly hood things be ok to use instead of buying a new rug with neck? Thanks with the help so far

If leaving some hair on the neck like in a chaser or trace (depending of course on how high you go!) you don't need a combo rug, the horse will have some protection from the hair left on the neck, of course there's nothing wrong with using a combo if you want!! Combo rugs are relatively new, hunters etc with everything off always used to have the traditional cut necks and never did them any harm!!! The problem with using a snuggly hood is if it gets wet then the horse will have a wet layer on it all day and is more likely to catch a chill from it, think if you stand outside with a wet jumper on. Their own coat dries alot quicker than a second layer.

See link for clips: the clip I'm talking about they call the chaser variation also known as an irish clip.
