I know have asked this question about Spooks, now it is Jerry's turn.

He has the strangest coat ever, really patchy and some places it is quite fine, others it is very thick and course. He is not shedding at all, was clipped feb time so not got a lot to lose, but does seem to be quite wooley. Not sure if its his summer coat come through very thick, or what. Anyways, was going to leave him to get on with it, dont mind having a patchy pony, but took him for a lesson yesterday and he got very sweaty, esp on his neck where he is wooliest. I am very tempted to clip him and take the lot off and see what grows back.

He is going to be eventing and really dont want him too hairy, what do you think? Should I take the lot off? Legs and all?

This was him a week or so ago, he is not much different now, might be a bit woolier....

Thanks

Do you know, Harry's coat is doing exactly the same thing at the moment. Completly bizarre!!
methinks the weather is doing very very strange things to their seasonal clocks...

With Harry I am just waiting for his coat to change, do think that there is a risk of their summer coats getting ruined if you clip them this late.. That is just my opinion anyway! Can't remember, did you have J last summer? What is his proper summer coat like? If he's always going to be wooly then by all means clip him, but looks like he may well have a very fine summer coat.

Clip him. Summer coat will not be affected.

It doesn't matter when you clip as hair grows constantly and is replacing itself constantly whether you clip or not.

The only difference is that after August the hair that grows back tends to be more thick and coarse (ie winter coat) and the hair that grows back after Jan tends to be finer (ie summer coat).

You know, looking at your picture I'd probably opt for not clipping. He doesn't look too bad WRT excess hair. Perhaps the cold weather has delayed the moulting process? My horse was clipped in December and he is not shedding any hair presently........

I was wondering about doing the same thing to my cob, but I think I will leave him for a couple of weeks and see how it goes.

If you intend to be out and about competing and want him to look as amart as possible, then clip him. He's lovely!

I wouldn't clip him just yet as they haven't finished moulting and it's possible that your boy is just not letting go of his winer coat just yet but the summer is coming through aswell. If he is still like this in a month or so once the weather has stabilised a bit then clip him by all means but I would just wait for now, him sweating won't do him much harm at the moment.

I dont mind a bit of sweat, but he is fit and it was a very easy lesson, he shouldnt have got hot tbh, just worried about him doing a ODE like this, esp with the weather as it is, being so unpredictable

Nope, don't clip, it's too late now. His summer coat should be nearly there now and the winter one is on it's way out, so I say no, groom loads

I wouldnt clip either. Give it another month or so and if he is still too wooly and getting too hot then maybe think about it again.

Give him a bath! (When the weather is a bit warmer) I bathed Boo to get some of his coat out but I groom him invigoratingly with a rubber curry brush every day and the hair I got out today was astonishing!! It's nearly all gone from his hind legs.

Not sure what to do with him at the mo either, but he is alot hairier than J, and managed today no probs.

I would say its too late, summer coat will be coming through. A amre on my yard was clipped to late and looks AWFUL, it is so patchy she looks dappled and she is the same bay as yours!
