Well I did consider it carefully, and the opinions given too. To quickly recap as I can't post a link- after losing my beloved great Dane x Rottweiler to bone cancer at the new year I have been offered another one. Trouble was he is a three year old entire male and I have young children so I was worried I was stupid to even think about it.
Fact is he came over for a play date with the kids and behaved impeccably with them, they wore him out playing ball! So now he is here for a week just to make sure we all get along before we finally decide, but as he has been playing football most of the morning then woofed at a scrappy that nearly came in the gate but then changed their mind, it all seems to be going well.
It's just a tad freaky though, he is the image of my old guy and after missing him so dreadfully to turn and catch sight of this boy looking so much alike is very weird. (Sort of Pet Cemetry kind of freaky)
Anyway, thanks for not thinking I was nuts to have him and encouraging me to give it a try!

just togive you some idea of how similar they are, this is my boy Merlin

seriously sorry about the size of these pictures!!

Well I've done it now, he was originally supposed to be going home for a while but no one wanted him to go. So he is now our big cuddly bear!
Big smiles all round in our house today apart from when he rolled in a fox poo out walking this evening!

Ooh, he's lovely!

Shamefully, I picked Bear on temperament then on similarity of looks to Jake (who we lost to stomach/spinal cancer) :o

Was obviously meant to be !! Uncanny how similar they are, both look like lovely dogs.
Hope it all works out for you ....

What a lovely update! Glad to hear you have been chosen..I wonder if there was any help in this from Merlin..best wishes for a long happy healthy fun time with Maximus :D

The similarities are remarkable, even down to Maximus appearing to have a wall eye, has he?

He really is a handsome dog, and I think that your toe-in-the-water approach is very sensible. I hope that it works out for you. He's a grand looking animal! ;)

Alec.
