Lolly has been slightly lame on one knee for a couple of weeks. The vet says its arthritis and we agreed to try to keep her sound on bute. The idea was 2 a day for 5 days and then reduce to half and day and so on. Well it's day 5 and she's only slightly better. She's fine at walk, but slightly lame in trot. She is 17hh 15yr old MW ID/TBx. Do you think I should carry on with 2 a day for a bit longer? Has anyone else had any experience of a similar problem?

Thought I might give it a few more days to see if it had more effect. Or not?

I think at this stage, because you are still exploring the issues with the vet and it's such early days you do need to go back to them for more discussions.

He'll probably say to keep her bute two a day a bit longer, but its best to ring your vet first.

Second this. Best to give your vet a ring and see what he/she says. Won't cost you anything apart from the cost of a phone call.

Agree with everyone else re ringing your vet. My horse has arthritis in his knee and would go lame for 3-4 days after being shod. A couple of months ago he went lame for 3 weeks after being shod and came sound after a course of stronger painkillers. I'm now managing him with cortaflex, magnetic boots and 1 bute per day (he is 22). In my horses case my vet advises me to treat the only symptom that we can which is the pain so this is why i have kept him on 1 bute to ensure he's totally comfortable. Cortaflex and magnetic boots have made a vast improvement and he's back in work again and happy as larry. he just has strong painkillers the day before and the day of being shod and then back to the usual routine.
