Should I go and bring them in?

My baby horses (yearlings soon to be 2 year olds yikes) are out in this weather (it’s blowing a hooley here) they are well fed and unrugged. They don’t come in except for feet, grooming , worming etc) they have natural shelter and a large wall wind break but no formal shelter. It’s officially 7 degrees but feels colder. Would you bring them in now or leave them where they are?

I’d assess it on whether they would be able to find safe shelter from tonight’s prevailing westerly gale force winds. If they can get their arses back up against the wall then that would be grand.

Also is there any debris or lightweight structures that could take off, blow around and spook them?

ETA I’m not far from you, and I’ve just come back in from doing my 3. While it’s not cold, it is properly windy out there, things are taking off and I had to fight against the wind to shut the gates. My 3 happily went back out to munch their strip grazing but they are older, are rugged and have field shelters.

Unless they are shivering hell no. it’s a bit of wind and some rain, the temperature is going up and absolutely no need. Our polo ponies both ridden and retired are out in all weathers with suitable forage and my two spoilt ponies, one of whom is a delicate WB are also out in it without rugs and are coping admirably.

If you believe them to be safe just leave them. I have gone to 'rescue' mine so many times, wandering round a huge muddy field in the dark trying to find them and they'll be happily asleep under a tree between some hills.

Mine are in because we've had some trees down but our land is hilly and really wet so ripe for loosening the roots, most trees are solid.

Leave them - mine are out and as long as they have plenty to eat and some shelter they’ll be fine. I have thick natural hedges and a shelter, 9 times out of 10 they tuck in against a hedge depending on wind direction in preference to the actual shelter 🤷‍♀️

That’s good to know. It was really wild here last night with several trees blown down locally, but fortunately none on my land. My three looked perfectly happy when caught up this morning, but the skid marks in the field revealed that they’d been charging about at some point.
