My horse and another liveries horse need to go to the vets yesterday. We used the other liveries trailer and 4x4. We loaded my horse first, walked in quietly and then she tried to back out, she stepped back with one foot onto the top of the ramp, followed by a crunching noise as her foot sunk into the wood. Luckily my horses foot didnt go all the way through so no injury. The other livery was upset about her trailer ramp and on inspection the wood on the ramp is very rotten and so are the side panels (old Ifor trailer). Luckily the floor has recently been replaced. I think the livery expects me to pay for the ramp. Should I offer to pay some of the bill? I want to do the right thing but I dont want to be taken as a fool.

Well if I was the other person I would be so glad your horse was not hurt and I would not expect you to pay its nor your fault the ramp was rotten .
If it's going to make life difficult though I would consider making a contribution though.

I have a lorry and if that situation happened I would be mortified that your horse could have been hurt.

I wouldn't expect you to pay anything. That is wear and tear. It wasn't damaged due to your horse's actions. It is rotten due to age and poor maintenance, so whether your horse put its foot through or not, she needs to sort out the ramp for safety.

I don't think you should have to pay for the ramp repair, but if you offer her something for taking you, the cost of the fuel etc., at least you will be making some sort of gesture towards her.

No, wouldn't have happened if it wasn't rotting & the danger has been found without an accident. That said, if I regularly got cheap transport with someone I'd offer to contribute to maintenance even if the fault had been discovered on a routine check.

I don't think you should..you did her a favour..in another situation a horse could have been hurt (one of hers) you may have saved her a vet bill!

Gosh this is a difficult one.

It was only fluke really that it was YOUR horse it happened to; had it been hers there'd have been no problem would there.

It depends really on how close you are as friends and/or fellow liveries and whether you want to basically fall out with her or not.

It was up to her to make sure her trailer was maintained properly - which it obviously wasn't; and had your horse been injured then you would have had an even more difficult situation to deal with.

But as others have said you are in no way responsible for this as it was basically a situation waiting to happen and thank goodness your horse wasn't injured.

Suggest you offer some ££££ to her as a goodwill gesture; not that you should feel obliged to. She may accept, she may decline, but at least you've offered, and it keeps the air good between you.

This happened to me, my friends horse put its foot through the floor, the wood had rotted (old Ifor Williams) Thankfully her horse was fine and i had the floor replaced straight away

Agree with others! Your horse (or hers) could of seriously been injured! She shouldnt allow horses (especially others) to travel when her trailer was that damaged. I would contribute towards the petrol it would of cost, or give her the money you agreed for her taking you (not sure of the situation)

No way should you give her money to fix the ramp! her fault, not yours.

Technically no, you shouldn't HAVE to pay.

However, if you are in the habit of using this liveries transport and would like to continue to do so in the future, I think it would be perfectly reasonable to expect to pay a contribution towards the maintenance.
