I went to view a horse to loan a few days ago and absolutley loved him, he was a dream to ride and very kind. But his owner says he has laminitis last summer for 2 weeks, she moved him to a new yard straight away as about 8 of the other liveries got laminitis too and it hasnt come back to the point where she would be happy for him to live out. all she said is that hell need a muzzle in summer if the grass is rich. This wouldnt worry me too much but, he has one deep ridge around his feet, about half the way down the hoof, on all four hooves and i thought a new hoof was grown 6 monthly, does this suggest theres more than just the one episode last summer? The owner suggested that the ridges appeared a couple of weeks after the laminitis.

As he would be on loan i would send him back should something go wrong and i can try to get the laminitis written into the contract, so that if it recurrs, im covered.

I dont want to miss this lovely horse because he was grazed on rich grass but i really dont want to take on a horse with too many issues as ive far too much experience in knowing how horrible that can be.

opinions please :)

Thankyou

It can depend on the horse with the whole new hoof capsule. The more work they do the quicker they grow due to the blood flow ( if he doesn't have shoes on that is )

The ridge is most probably related to his laminitis.

Once a horse has had laminitis they are at a higher risk of getting it again. I'm not saying don't take the horse on, but you must be prepared to put more effort into his management. Without knowing your stabling set up it's difficult to comment so I would suggest you discuss with your vet whether you are in a position to correctly manage this horse.

Also bear in mind that if the horse does get a bad bout you really will need to be able to deal with this in the early stages. 'Just sending the horse back' isn't fair on the horse or the owner

Good point - there is no way I would Loan my horse to someone that was just going to send it back if it got Lami again! They could just stick it in a sugar field !!

that said ALL horses can get lami, but it can be managed if you are well informed enough. Of all the "issues" horses get this would be the least of my worries. However if you are just looking for something to stick in a field and hack out at the weekend then it's unlikely this is the one for you.
