I have recently got a cob geling on full loan and was planning on doing some small showing shows and dressage on him. He has a high crest on his neck as he was gelded late. He is a welsh cob cross so I was wondering if I should plait him? If so what kind of plait would you suggest?

I would, with that mane. Pull it a bit first though! He'll look very smart plaited up :) Only time I wouldn't would be for a M&M class I think, and he's not a true M&M so...?

He's so cute!

Even though it's on loan?

This, and I don't reckon, with that neck, it would look good? I think it would make him look more cresty, and the crestiness is clearly not topline muscle and so not what you want to show off to that extent!

We had a coblet on loan and we weren't allowed to touch his feathers beyond basic trimming- it was a big part of the loan agreement! He'd have looked like a different pony sans feather (he had 4 white socks up to his knees and the feather was enormous!) as he wasn't tremendously cobby when properly fit... But feather remained, end of!

What class are you planning on doing?

If showing as a cob hogged would be best but if not then plaiting a part bred welsh should be plaited.

Would the owner mind you hogging?

Vanner - can you tell me how a cob should be shown for a coloured class? Is that a trad class? My instructor mentioned I should try and get to one this summer (first timer) but I have no idea what that would involve. You look like the expert to ask going from your avatar!!

Thankyou Tiffaney and Lolo for your comments :) and thank you everyone for your advice I think I will let his mane grow a bit and leave it loose

Depends on wether you are showing as a traditional/native or as a show cob.

Show cobs have all hairy bits trimmed; mane hogged, feathers off, tail trimmed and usually pulled.

Traditionals/natives are shown in full hairy glory. Mane and tail untrimmed feathers flowing :). My favourite way :)

Coloured cobs can be shown in coloured classes in either way but some shows split hairies and non hairies.

;) and flattery always welcome ;)
