Basically, I've been working as a waitress in a hotel for the past year now, and it's a good laugh, pretty **** pay, and always evenings... which I hate. So was thinking, maybe I should quit, and get another job for the summer? It's only til I go to uni, and really want something during the day and only weekdays, so I can still event my horse. Also it's so light at night, I can ride in the evenings. The other problem with my job atm, is that I'm really struggling to get weekends off as it's wedding season.... I requested for the 11th/12th June off for Oatridge - my first novice, and there is only one person who hasn't asked for it off.... 2 people are in Germany on a school trip and 3 people are at Rockness Festival... So was thinking of quiting so I can compete more, i just hate not having evenings free, i have zero social life as i work 5 nights a week...

Or maybe I'm being silly and should just stick with it, but will mean I might not be able to go to Oatridge.... :(

Thanks for any help...

Might be best to stick with the old job at least until you have another one. Not sure how easy it is to get seasonal work this year due to the financial climate?

The other advantage of sticking with the old job is that you have some continuity on your CV. Secondly, if you leave on such short notice they probably won't give you a nice reference? Do you have a work contract which says how much notice to give them?

I can see your dilemma....

If you need to have a job, depending on how much notice you will need and such I would try to find another job first as I know many students who are really struggling to find work this summer - there may be very little else on offer :o Or if a job is not essential you could risk it, and have a lovely summer off if you cant find anything else! :)

Good luck either way!

Take it from someone who has been out of work for over a month now...don't do it until you find something else especially if you want the money to compete. I have had to stop my lessons and competitions as I have started to dip into my savings.

I know what it's like to have a **** job but at the moment a **** job is better than no job!

Good luck, I'll cross my fingers for you!

I see your point, and unfortunately I need the money to event, and to save for uni... I only have to give a weeks notice, so think i will stick with it, just don't know what to do next weekend... thats £64 down the drain.... and mucks up the rest of my season plan.... :(

call in sick, as oatridge is a good event, i was meant to do it last year but my pony trotted up lame the night before :( it's def worth calling in sick for, just make sure you dont get caught lol

I would stick with it, and throw some sickeys if you don't care about getting a 100% positive reference for the future :)

As a student myself it is soooooo hard to get any summer work, last summer I was jobless and my OH was a bin man as it was all he could get. I tried everywhere and there is nowt about. Luckily I am finishing uni next week, but now I can't find any full time work!

I would stick with it :D i'm currently jobless and need a job for summer then weekends. It's horrible not having money and i feel bad always scrounging of parents :/ i'm also not going to rockness when all my friends are and don't really buy alot of new expensive things for buzz since i don't have money. But i would say pull sickies! :)

id stick with it...

pull a sickie if needby, trouble is the market as it is - its not worth quitting!

Yes very true about no one else being able to get a job... what about advertising for house sitting/doing people horses or animals when on holiday? Or will that not generate enough money...

I'm pretty sure I'd get caught pulling a sickie, most people at work know why i want that weekend off, although my manager doesn't, im sure he'd find out... And although I can't get fired for it, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't give me a good reference.... ugh :(

Apart from eventing thing sounds similiar situation to my daughter but she want to jump.
Think the house sitting/holiday thing is very seasonal.
Pet hate of mine is pulling sickies!Spoils it for people who are genuinely sick and your colleagues will have to pick up the slack. And s*ds law you'd probaly do really well and have your pic in paper !
And tho you may not get fired on this occasion it may all stack up against you in time and future employers DO ask what sick time is like in references.
I know a few folk tbh are really nice people and friends but there is no way I'd give them a job.I see how many sickies they take when not really sick!
Look for more suitable job before packing present one in.
The joy of adulthood and working I'm afraid.Pain tho.

You need to decide how important this event is, and if there will bemore opportunities. Also - it isnt possible for them to give you a bad reference, they are not allowed to.

I take it that it is a small hotel locally? Is it a chain - could they not take on someone from another hotel to cover that shift?

No BUT they can refuse to give one as far as I'm aware which imo speaks volumes.
TBH try and see if they can work something out for you they can only say no!
Otherwise just work it and pre book time off for your next event.
I used to have to this when daughter was competeing as had to leave say Thurs pm and it was a pain as you'd work out all the shows (according to dates given) book off work then show would be cancelledand/or moved to another date,if I was lucky got them changed if not well had to work.No work = no money for horses/competeing in my case
Its very frustrating!
