Should I re-insure or not?

Hi,

I have just had my old boys renewal through. Basically he is 24 and now fully retired. He is currently insured on a mature horse policy since he turned 15. He is obviously covered for liability and upto £2000 vets fees (none accidental).
He no longer needs the public liability as he is never off the yard and on the yard is covered through that insurance.
Should I bother to reinsure as I feel any major things which would be worth claiming for are too serious and therefore I wouldn't put him through much if any treatment for things such as colic.
Is it worth paying a couple of hundred pounds to insure him for not very much? I do have a niggle in back of my mind that as soon as he isnt insured something will go wrong (feel free to tell me that is stupid!!)

Thanks,

Mince pies and hot chocolates

My vet said to me that the thing that usually catches people out when their horses are uninsured is if they have an accident and need stitches etc as this can quite quickly build up into a big bill...

I've just reduced my two old horses to just basic, no third party as covered by BHS membership.
One now costs approx. £45/year (was nearly £400 with vets fees) the other is now £142 (was £380).

i had my golden oldie insured with PP on their veteran plan which is injury only not illness but in there are disposal fees which can be roughly £500 for a small pony, It cost me £9.96 per month and they paid out £1000 in an unexpected vets bill!.
