Just about to clip my hairy traditional, full clip with legs on. The weather is very mild for this time of year, so i am having an argument with myself about rugging! Temps are between 17 - 19 degrees this weekend!!!!
Do I put a no fill on and light stable rug at night - OR - leave her naked????
What to do.......????

My hipo is due his 3rd full clip of this season at the weekend. He has been naked every day since clipping with a no fill sheet on at night, he is still out 24/7. Only reason for the rug is in case we get rain, feel a bit mean letting him get soaked through with no fluff! He hasnt felt cold once and Ive never seen him shiver :)

Honestly - you would think I'm new to this game - I usually clip this time of year and put a rug on - no if's or but's BUT i cant remember the weather being this mild before!

Weather is weird at the moment. I've got a 50G turnout on my blanket clipped horse who is turned out overnight. I put on a no fill rug during day but just to keep him clean in stable (he's a coloured and loves to lie in poo). Anything heavier and he sweats! He is also sweating being exercised so I'm going to clip him again this weekend - even though he was only clipped 2 weeks ago... Just a note to say I use a 50G for the overnight turnout because of rain as I find the no fills are seldom waterproof!

Even when I do clip I don't tend to rug unless it's under 10 degrees anyway and they are out so can move and produce heat when grazing. Different if stabled as I think horses are colder in the stable as unable to move.

Clipped my hairy traditional a couple weeks ago, legs and body off, head left on. She's been out naked since, as even if this weather and being clipped she gets far too warm, especially under her mane. I did put a 0g on her one night, and she was sweaty as anything when it came off in the morning!

Could you give him a trace or similar for now and leave naked, then whip the rest off when the weather warrants rugging.

I haven't properly decided yet but may be clipping and leaving unrugged until it gets colder. I may do a blanket clip first then but am thinking she needs to lose weight too so maybe should go straight for the hunter clip... that's not helpful at all us it? Lol. Basically yes, the weather is weird and I'm not sure what to do either!

Was having this conversation with a friend yesterday. She has two tanks and they are fully clipped and out naked. They need to lose some weight, have great grazing and sheltered by high hedges, fields. I think she mentioned a 0g if rain was forecast overnight?

Same dilema with my mare, she is so hot and itchy right now and the weather this weekend is supposed to be warm early 20's!! Ahhhh dont know what to do either!!! I 'think' im gona go full legs on and a rain sheet overnight if rain is forecast. .... I think!

One of my horses (a warmblood) was clipped out apart from legs about 10 days ago. He's been going out in the field unrugged and has a summer weight Thermatex on at night. He is plenty warm enough. The other morning when there was quite a chilly wind I did turn him out in his no-fill Rambo but then took it off a couple of hours later when the sun came out.

I'm planning to clip this weekend and leave the pony unrugged for a few days because of the mild weather and to let him have a good 'airing' and a scratch as before long I wont have a choice to leave him unrugged

I fully clipped my ID out today and turned him out naked afterwards as warm & sunny but have put a medium weight rug on overnight as a lot of coat came off and I clipped with fine blades I don't think I would leave a newly clipped horse out overnight without a rug unless they were absolutely obese.

Depends on the horse and the weather I'd guess. If it's that warm I'd leave off during the day definitely as for the nights it's awkward. If in need of dropping weight then possibly leave off if it stays warm or just something lightweight if not perhaps... I'm in this dilemma with mine that's just been clipped (just a trace clip). He gets cold / drops weight easily and seems to cope better with being a bit warm that being cold so I thinking I'm maybe going to opt for rainsheet at night / off in day (he's in a 40g with neck tonight as I didn't realise temperature was staying quite high) but as I say he is a bit of a wuss and if I don't wrap him in cotton wool he just drops weight (Very annoying as I'm normally a "better a bit cold than a bit warm" person but I just can't do that with him)

I've just clipped The Beast. Went straight for a hunter clip and have left unrugged! I feel bad but it was 18 degrees at 5pm and shes got plenty of fat to keep her warm. Going to see how she goes now.

One of mine had a hunter clip this afternoon and as it is so warm at night he is unrugged (as are the ones who were clipped a couple of weeks ago).

Mine have just had a trace clip at the moment so I can leave them without rugs. They are quite furry but I seem to have got enough off to stop them sweating too much when exercised. I'm also away for a week soon, so will do full clip when I'm back. Although try explaining to a non horsey friend that I will take more coat off when it gets colder. :))

My three are all sweating like Jimmy Saville in a Barney the Dinosaur costume. Clipping not far off.
I hope you don't mind Case but I'm going to pinch that one :joy: :joy: :joy: I always used to say Gary Glitter in a playground but that's so much better!
