Hi,

I have a bit of a dilema and could do with some other opinions. I have been riding a share horse twice a week for just over a year. I really like him and his owners are lovely. Unfortunately just before Christmas he went lame and hasn't really been in proper work since. He is currently being ridden for short periods of time in walk but the general feeling is that it is probably arthritis and noone quite knows if/when he will be in full work again.

I am not sure whether or not to call it a day and try and find a new horse share (who may not be as nice/have such nice owners) or whether i should just wait and see what happens.

Opinions??

Hmmm hard one tbh!! but it would definetly be understandable if you didnt want to carry on! .... it personally depends on whether or not you want to do with the share horse .... and how much you are paying ....if they are still asking for you to pay the same amount then i would definetly ask for it to be cheaper if you wanted it to be carried on ....
i hope you work it out

must be a horrible decision for you to make!!

Agree with ellie it really depends on what you want from a share horse, i would not blame you if i were the owner if you wanted to try and find something else you could do full work with.
Good luck with your decision, only you know what you want out of a horse, but on the outside i would say cut your losses with this lovely horse and owners, as said horse may have to be retired, 5months is quite a while. The horse may come right but it depends on if you want to be out there competing for example as to whether you should carry on or not

Thanks for the replies.

I haven't been paying anything whilst he has been off work, his owners really are lovely. I would like something that can bring my riding on though, i enjoy schooling and would quite like to do more jumping, guess i feel i should try and look for something else and hope i can be lucky again.

I think the lameness isn't the only issue if you are wanting to do more with a share horse. I would have a chat with them and say you love them and the horse to bits but want something you can school on now. To be honest thier horse may never return to full work so it would be better to move on anyway.
