Should I use a field lick?

I was thinking about giving a field lick to my elderly welsh C who lives out but comes into an almost bare paddock at night so he has something to lick but I fear he may lick it all night so therefore am worried about all the sugar in it!

yeah I can but don't they also have molasses in them? I guess what I'm asking is is it ok to give overnight access to a lick without risk of weight increase? thanks

i would think so mine used to sometimes get them not all the time but they never but weight on off it

I bought one last year for the youngsters, they didn't like it and never touched it! It ended up getting full of rain water and going really runny! YUCK!! I then stuck it in with my sister in laws small ponies and they ate it

I think a rock salt lick is a better idea

oh no he loves them, that's the point, I fear he would lick it all night so wanting to know if that's a problem.

Yes, my 2 TBs finished a molasses based lick (10kg) in 3 days... Now they only get the Rockies salt licks - they like them too.

my mums old boy had a feild lick with molasses in and stood and licked it all afternoon and ended up going down with colic so im quite weary of them really.And there proberly not all that great for weight loss lol.

Can you not get small field licks? So that even if they did stand and lick it all night, there isn't enough there to cause any harm? Or maybe cut up a field lick or something if you see what I mean?

Better off to feed some seriously soaked hay, a lick will be full of bad things for your pony...... unless its a salt one.

I do, mine go mad for the first 2 days, then settle down & hardly touch them more than once a day. I found that horslyx are the best & dont wash away in the rain. Go to their website for more details.

I use the original in their stables, as they are in for part of the day.

Ditto that, mine gets bored after a few days and just picks at it occasionally. Depends how greedy your horse is! Horslyx shouldn't cause any weight gain (according to their rep, not entirely sure I believe it!)

I'd use something like a Rockies mineral lick or Simple Systems bucket salt lick. Also give your oldie lots of soaked hay so that his hindgut is kept moving. If you soak it to lose the sugars then you can feed him ad lib without the calories.
