YO and I decided to leave him unclipped this year but after our short canter through the field at the weekend he was sweating all up his neck, even around his ears and chest. Haven't seen him sweat that much but he always sweats around the girth line.
He's a 13yo tb. Ridden 2-4 times a week which is either 45 minutes in the school or 1/ 1.5 hour hacking. At the moment he gets about 1 - 4 hours out grazing due to the fields still being wet, the rest of the time he's in. I also have every type of rug so he doesn't get cold! He struggles to hold his weight but doing well so far.
I'm trying to build up his fitness and muscle so will be trotting for longer/doing more short canters etc.

Should he be clipped (bib clip maybe?) or leave him as he is?

I would, especially as you are going to start doing more work with him, you don't want him being uncomfortable. With it being so cold you don't want him being dripping wet with sweat in the cold as he will catch a chill.

I would chaser clip and rug well but not too much later than now
He wil hold weight better if he is clipped and then rugged to keep warm. sweating makes them lose weight quickly

chaser clip is my favourite. Gets the job done without being too much. Ive recently bought a horse who came with a full clip and its a nightmare, cant take his rug off for more than a minute without him getting cold.
