My horse has been lame for a few days now, I have been box resting him with a few ambles in hand round the yard so he doesn't get stiff/bored. There is (and never was) any heat in his leg or hoof, he looks nearly 100% in walk but in trot his body dips noticeably as his left forefoot hits the floor. He shows no pain on palpation or any other abnormalities so I wonder if he may have pulled a muscle (or something) in his shoulder. The vet is coming to look tomorrow. Does anyone have any experience of shoulder lameness signs or any ideas what else it might be?

Shoulder lameness is quite unusual. More likely foot. This weather is perfect fro abscesses.

I remember years ago ringing my old vet to in a panic late at night to say that my horse was very lame in the hock. He said "Poultice his hoof, I'll be there in the morning!"

My horse developed this in may, it did not look like a super lameness but you could tell there was someting wrong. i box rested her for a few nights but this made it worse. i kept her turned out for a few days and it look like it had sorted its self out. But it came back as soon as i jumped her so i call a mucsle theropist out and she explained that my horse had jared her shoulder putting a mucsle knot in between the should and leg causing stiffness and a slight nod to her head, she said that this is very common in all horse, the heavy types mainly but she did get a couple of tb's with this issue. i HIGHLY recommend one of these, pamela bryan is the one i used she also gave you some exercise to do, Touch wood she has been sound since . Good luck. Also there was no heat any where on my neddys body just like urs, our cases sound alike !!! if you need her pamela bryans number i will happly post it. just reply, she goes all over the country and does top event horse such as Ellen whitikers

Get your farrier to take the shoes off and have a look. Had a similar problem last year which looked like shoulder lameness but actually turned out to be a corn caused by grit caught under the shoe.
