girl at our place loans a 14hh cob from someone else at the yard. He is now footsore, never had shoes on, but the owner refuses to let him have shoes on. So loaner cant ride him out on the roads, or on bridlepath as quite stony, she says its pointless keeping him really. We just cant understand why she doesnt want him shod, only want to put two fromt on, loaner willing to pay for them etc. Owner doesnt ride him at all. -bizarre to me or am I bein thick??

If I were her I would tell the owner that if he can't have shoes on then she would like to return him as he cannot do the job she loaned him for. If she's really keen on the pony, then she should tell the owner that as a point of good welfare for the pony, he needs shoes on as he will be in pain if he continues to go without.

Hopefully the threat of him being returned will do the trick!

I have a loan horse and he came barefoot - first thing I did was put some shoes on him and didn't consult the owner - to be honest it never crossed my mind to ask her. I need to hack on roads and stony paths and so therefore the horse IMO needed shoes.

If it is in the interest of the pony's welfare, it should be done. If pony can't wear shoes for a medical reason, then that's something they need to thrash out. What about 'hoofboots' of some sort, as a compromise?

The owner keeps her horse at the same place and it has shoes on!!! She has just rang heartbroken but is giving owner tack back tomorrow and not loaning it anymore. She has spent loads on him and loved him loads. Shame. Still find it very bizarre

That's such a shame. My pony has gone on loan today and I have all my fingers crossed she'll behave as the little girl who has taken her is absolutely fantastic and it's a home to dream of.

I'm seeing her tomorrow and will do anything I can to help them keep her. She has no shoes on but think they may find she needs them - in which case most certainly they may have them on. Why wouldn't I allow it?

Thats what I think- but suppose it wouldnt do for us all to be the same!! I think she is being very mature for 13, and I take my hat off to her.

My horse is out on loan unshod, and he doesnt need shoes - he has been perfectly fine in the past on stoney ground and hacking on roads unshod. Only ever had one foot problem - and absess - that he got when shod and wasnt noticed until shoes taken off.

I would actually be annoyed if his loaner shod him without consulting me as he is still my horse, and for him to be shod whilst on loan, then to come back to me in such a way and not needing the shoes, I would have to put him through a week or too of discomfort when the shoes come off again. It is however only stated that he needs farrier attention in the loan agreement, shoeing exactly isn't, but I have said to her he doesn't need them.

If this pony has never had shoes on, its feet should be quite tough, so I would wonder if there is maybe more than it just being footsore?

I dont think he was ridden on roads or stony ground before. He had not been ridden for ages when she got him, and was fine through winter as not much road work. It has def been since he has done more work on the roads, and he tries to walk on the grass at every opportunity. Doesnt dip head for grass so thats not the reason. If he is ridden in the field or school he is fine. Anyway, his tack has been returned today, and he is now the responsibility of his owner. No loan agreement was in place, and there have been a fw more problems between them, think this was the straw that broke the camels back to be honest.
