I am trying to start some showing with one of my horses but I am not too sure what to be feeding to get him in his optimum condition what do you guys feed? He is quite hard to keep weight on and he is currently being feed Allen Page Calm & Condition, Baileys Cooked Cereal Meal, Mollichaff Chaff Showshine and a drop of flax seed oil. Any hints or tips would be of great appreciation

Hi, I struggled so much trying to keep weight on my thoroughbred. you would think i never fed him he was always so skinny with ribs out and a sloped bum. But i have been feeding him Alfa - A Oil + Spillers number 4 conditioning cubes. and he has put so much weight on in a controlled way. in the last month or so (including ridden work to help build muscle).
hope this helps :)

You could ditch the cereal and use alfa oil, calm and condition and linseed It is what I feed everything. High protein gives the building blocks for the topline and means the horse develops the right way, up too much hay, grass haylage makes for big bellies and little topline. Exercise, hill work and working correctly from behind will also help topline. Hollowing from being hauled in at the front may make the muscles the wrong way up and detract from the topline

Looks like it's a big thumbs up for Alfa Oil, would you's recommend ditching the Mollichaff Showshine if I replace it with Alfa Oil? 'Windand rain' what exercises would you recommend for building topline along with hill work as I haven't been at my new yard long and I'm not sure if their is hills around to hack up and down. Any info is of great help :)

You need to choose a feed high on protein (around 13%) and energy (above 12MJ/kg). You want good quality protein high on essential amino-acids so search for feeds with soy and/or alfalfa.

Then try to work your horse with his neck stretched down and engaging his hind leg.
