First it was hats now its the jackets.

Gone are the days of the traditional blue/black velvet riding hats, now its the streamline, low profile light weight carbon helmets with the ventilation systems for increased the air flow along with the moisture wicking fabrics .....you get the idea and there not just in one colour, a mixture of blue/red and black.

But now its the jackets...or lack of, is it the in thing not to bother with the traditional show jacket any more? again they started off blue/back/red..green if you were Irish, then came the grey ones, then came pin stripes and finally the pink velvet collars and matching buttons etc...and so forth but now people are not bothering with those either, everyone seems to donning posh looking zip up riding jackets, or do these have built protection and air flow systems as well?

I don't mind change if its for the better (comfort and safety), just wondered if it was? or are you just old fashioned wearing a show jacket these days?

Know what you are saying. I am still traditional and wear a tweed or navy traditional jacket with a velvet hat. Only concession to modern is my shirt. Was chatting to someone recently who has gone for a modern style jacket and she loves it as it is dead easy to wash etc. Have to say the jacket this person wears does look smart but not sure I am ready to go that route!

No - you can wear a blouson at home.
Being correctly turned out shows respect to the organiser, course builder and organiser.
And a well tailored jacket is much more flattering

i hate the new sj jackets, theyre not very flattering, or attractive.
im into the good old traditional jackets with the velvert color, stock shirts + stocks white jods, velvert hatt with a nice pair of shineyy boots

Like others on this thread I don't like the new style SJ jackets - they are not at all smart. My daughter wears a plain black jacket with a black velvet collar.

At the weekend there were a few kids wearing red jackets with a tab across the small of the back with their name on in diamonte - YUK!

That sounds tackorama.

Agree with most on here, the traditional jackets just look smarter and are sooo flattering (instant hourglass! What's not to like?!)

I wear a black jacket and my normal skull cap and black silk (I dont have money for a nice velvet one

) I dont see the point in all this new fangled stuff, but if you have the money for it all, good on you..I suppose..

I thought you had to be in the top 250(or something) to be able to wear a red jacket BSJA?

I like the new style, totally legal BSJA jackets. As soon as I find a shop stocking them that isn't mail order so I can try one on I will buy one.

All those people that say they don't like them how does it affect you someone else wearing these jackets? Does it distract you at shows so you ride worse, do you think it upsets the non existant spectators at horse shows, or is it disrepestful to the judges to wear a jacket approved by their governing body?

Just curious how someone wearing a different type of jacket can upset you all so much.

Get a grip - no-one's 'upset'. We're just stating a preference. I go to BSJA and see all kinds of bling on the juniors - I might no like it persoanlly but it doesn't 'upset' me or detract for enjoying watching the kids jumping their ponies and feeling good for them if they do well.

I agree, i think it's sad to see the good old days of traditional show gear go out the window. So much smarter, and at the end of the day, it's not about looking all modern and as blingy as you can, it's about your performance, which is why i think the traditional, smart gear is good - sort of like a uniform,

I don't like the new jackets and I agree the traditional style ones look smarter because they are more tailored. I don't like the new style boots either. However, I do like the carbon insert hats, diamante bridles, fly fringes, etc.. And I have a black warmblood, which also seems to be highly fashionable!

This is probably the 100th post on how awful these jackets are - now who needs to get a grip?

Don't quote me - I didn't start the post - just added to it that I don't like the new styles either.

Could someone let me know if I was right in thinking that about the jacket colour? Just because I remember wanting to ave a different colour jacket and perusing the rule book which said only riders in the top howevermany could wear a red jacket, 'normal' riders could only wear blue/black/green/grey.

I grew up with the traditional stuff....and I prefer it it goddammit.

Next you'll be telling me that you can get lightweight waterproof jackets and that I dont need my waxed Barbour anymore

Seriously, I'm not bothered what anyone else wears but personally I like a smart black jacket with stock....I do like the pink collared ones though, but as someone else said, I can wear a blouson/zip-up jacket at the yard, when I go to a show I want to look smart.
