Ok so ive bitten the bulliet and entered my first proper dressage this saturday ( only ever done 2 tests as part of a ode's and they were awful and my horse was tence, left the ring and spooked hard

)

Im riding prelim 13 and its at a venue she likes in a school she knows so hoping she wont be as silly this time.

I have a tb with a very long neck and a thick mane and i have plaitted before but would be very grateful if you could all post piccies of your horses and ponies plaitted up and if you used bands of sew them in.

I have never sewed them but i assume the finish is better.

Plaitting is no easy task and she takes 19 up her long neck and one forelock plat

.

I cant pull her mane as she gets too distressed and bleeds from the crest but i have shortened it using a solo comb but its still thick.

Be good to see other pics of their neddies all plaitted up. Hehe all this for a 4.5 min test

Thses are the only ones I can find where you can actually see the plaits properly, they are not great as her mane was quite long and thick and she is like a jack in a box so I have to chase her round the stable to do them but should give you an idea.

I use a band at the bottom of the plait but sew them up.

They all look better than my efforts, oh dearie me we are going to look very out of place!.

It does help seeing them unplaitted too so i can compare.

Ive never used bands to put the base plait in before and then sewn up- thats a fab idea but i am cluless as how to sew them in.

This is her plaiteed up at a ODE last year

Yours look lovely!!

Remember dressage plaits are different to showing ones. My example plaits are done by someone as they would be for county hunter classes.

THe standard of plaiting at dressage (IME) is usually much lower than at shows, as it's not as important

Thanks but i think your too nice

.

My other question is who plaits so that it sits on the top of the neck and who plaits so it sits more on right side of the neck and is more folded over?.

The ones that are folded under to sit on the side seem to look better?

Im all for any tips anyone can give me

I have been out to a couple of dressage comps recently - my horse hates his mane being pulled, and now he hates it being plaited. He has a thick mane, so eventually managed to get it to a reasonable length and leave it at that. It might not look very smaer, but when he hates having it done (poor lad starts shaking - think hes had a bad experience somewhere), far better him looking a bit scruffy that looking nice and smart, but being in a right state

Showing plaits do usually look better and I think dressage people should use every method at their disposal to steal the showing peoples plaiting secrets. At dressage it doesnt matter but I love to turn my horse out well so on a personal level it does matter.

Your chunky grey is lovely by the way
