Thinking that I would rather like a RS-tor, but I know that some people make them using rope(?) or some other material. So I was wondering if any of you have made them? If so, what did you make them with? Do they work? :p Any pictures would be brilliant if possible :)

Thank you! :)

Got no picky, but hubby made one, piece of webbing with loop at each end that he fitted over each stirrup bar, then tied a thick length if elastic rope to that, which had several knots along its length to give grip.
Worked a treat on his initially very spooky horse.

The price of equipment like this is absolutely staggering!

I had a peep at the videos on their website and I'm pretty confident you could make one by attaching a pair of webbing side reins (to give the adjustment), a large steel ring and an extra piece of webbing to make the handle. I'm sure I can find the bits in my rug repair kit.

In fact, I'm going to look into making myself one - if it works, I'll let you have a pic!

I was looking at something you attach to the front of your saddle to grab in an emergency and was appalled to see it cost £10 . I hate flash nosebands with a passion, and I always take them off my bridles so I've got a box fill of flash straps - just the right length to attach to the Ds on the front of the saddle. Although I use a pelham rounding, which looks neater.

Thanks for the replies :) Liking the idea of webbing with the elastic attached, might try to attempt making one but I'm not the best at DIY :o And Natch, those do look good thanks :)

I made one, It looks like an upside down Y with loops in the ends of the V part that go over the stirrup bars, and a sort of knob an the end of the other. It works a treat and has been really useful. I fell off once but the gadget took all the force out of the fall and the landing was very soft. The other time the pony had a panic and did a 180 degree turn, ran for about ten strides then a dead stop. I was amazed that I was still aboard.
I made it because I had a few falls of my young pony and had completely lost my bottle. It gave me the confidence to try again, and I used it for several months before it was recently put to the test twice. I am enjoying riding him now, even after falling off again. He has not done anything wrong, him being a young pony and me being a rusty OAP meant he can move a lot faster than me. LOL. I forgot to say I made it out of wide webbing.

Not pretty, but it works.

Put a flash strap between the d rings of the saddle and then clip on a short bit of rope with a knot in the end. Voila!

So, looking at these, I don't necessarily need to put elastic on it then?

I've found my spare side reins, a metal ring and a roll of webbing, and I'm going to use a couple of martingale stops to make the handle (note to self - stop off at the tack shop on the way to yard tomorrow!).

Watch this space!

OK - finally got round to putting it together!

Two lengths of webbing approx 15" long
One length of webbing approx 28" long
One triangular ring stolen from a rug
One metal slider
One martingale ring

It took about half an hour to stitch it all together :)

Very good! I quite like the idea of this, I want something subtle I can hold and not interfere with my hands, and not something I have to actively grab for, just a safety blanket really. A neckstrap is worse than useless in the event of an over head fall!

I think the handle bit on the RS tor is too bulky anyway.

I like that Diamonddogs, the martingale ring idea is good, I will try and get one on mine, to improve the stop at the end. The strap has had a good testing lately and it has worked every time, (so far). It has improved my confidence immensely.
