So, new horse arrives next week and I need to get some basic tack together.

What colour tack suits a skewbald and what colour saddle pads will look good on her? Never had a skewbald so I have no idea what will suit her and what will make her look daft. Pictures of her on my other thread if anyone wants to look at her before deciding :)

Focus on your horses comfort rather than colours that suit. Buy the best comfortable saddle pads that fit your horse and saddle.

Think this generally goes without saying....

OP, I think the Le Mieux range is fab. Great quality and lovely classic colours. They are very well cut too :) fairly pricey but worth it. Our mare is piebald and looks lovely in the benetton blue, coral red and grey. They also do greens, yellows and burgundy and I think some new season colours are just about to be launched. Look forward to pics once you invest! ;)

Watching with great interest, as I have the exact same question. I'm leaning towards the classic look of the right kind of chestnutty brown, but still looking to find the exact right colour. Would be interested to see what you decide!

I'll update with photos when I've treated myself and had them all on her :)

Hmm, that really does look good! Is that Le Mieux?

Can I ask a really silly, and probably controversial, question - what is the purpose of the bandages? Do they serve an actual function, or are they there just to look good? Ditto with the current trend for the ear nets - don't they irritate the horse? I don't want to dress my horse up for no reason, she's a beautiful colour in her natural form, but if there's a purpose to these things, then matching is good :D

I have brown tack for my girl and she looks amazing in burgundy and le mieux mustard yellow!
Regarding the comment about proper tack, there's always one! Can't a girl just have some fun? :D

Yep, Le meiux. Although eBay is your friend :p
I don't usually use bandages, just brushing boots, but if I'm going to a lesson or fancy dressing up for home I'll put them on. I think in this case I was doing small collection circles and the woof boots were wet from day before so put these on instead. Don't bandage if you aren't good at it - you need to get it absolutely right so you don't damage the horse. Luckily for me my YO is who taught me to ride and she's proper BHS/proper horsemanship so when she taught me it had to be 100% or she'd fail me :p but thanks to her I can bandage anything :D

So basically, bandages look good but if you aren't sure how to do it then don't!

I'm fancying burgundy too, it's one of my favorite colours. I'm going black tack for now as have a lot left over from my previous horses, but will eventually probably buy a decent saddle, rather than a synthetic one, and bridle rather than second hand ones that I don't mind getting wrecked if we have some tantrums from her :D

When I had my little skewbald boy, he looked fabulous with either a brown or burgundy saddle cloth.

I used a white one once, and boy it looked awful. Even though he was lovely and clean, the bright white made his white bits look grubby!
