We put our yard in when we bought the house. Stables with cover with decent concrete pad, school in front and hardcore between stables and school. We then extended hardcore so it’s roughly half a school size to the side of stables to park stuff. Winter fields are all directly off the yard. I’ve finally finished paying for it (yet!) and want to make the hardcore area a winter turnout section to save fields a bit and for times when it’s really wet. I used it a few winters ago and they made a real mess of it (poo picking on hardcore is hard!!) and their free access to the stable area not ideal. Anyone created a turnout area, what’s your base, how easy is it to maintain etc and how big? Thanks

This is something I've been looking at. Apparently wood chip is a no go, which was my initial thoughts. So I'm interested to see what people suggest.

I haven’t got my own land but if I did I’d set up stables with an area directly outside them that could be fenced off with electric tape. I’ve done this at my rented field while fields were too wet. Worked well. Has to be individual but if there’s no grass they just need fresh air and a little bit of movement. Hate winter.
