Show producers - what do they do?

They are specialised breeders - who breed for competition. They usually breed and produce for HOYS or other top flight comp and sell on to highest bidder (so to speak). Will be for all the different disciplines they specialise in e.g. show hack, driving etc

Some also take on and train prospects for the showring - I think this is what a friend does... patience of a saint is needed. Also from the horses POV -they are primped and preened, buffed and oiled up so much you need sunglasses just to look at one!

They will take a horse and train, prepare - correct feed, trimming, presentation etc and if wished compete the horse for you in the show ring. Others will provide lessons in ringcraft and showing production for you.

Not all breed their own horses, but some do.

Basically they are exactly the same as any other professional but choose the showring rather than say the dressage circuit.

Like a racehorse trainer, only with a show horse. So it is fed, groomed, schooled at home to produce a good show in the ring which includes being ridden by its normal rider, and in english classes, to be ridden by a judge too. It takes a lot of work to get the horse to do the right thing at the right time. Try training a horse to prick its ears all the time! It has to stand correctly when required, etc. etc. To prepare for the show ring it is washed, plaited, the tack and rider's turnout are exactly what is considered "correct" for that class. This includes youngstock and in hand classes too.

Some show producers will keep the horse and let the owner show it in the ring.

Thank you both for that info. I was confused because I saw one someone that I know showing her own pony at a county show yesterday but I know that when their ponies compete at HOYs they are ridden by the show producer.
