My friend has a lovely Fresian x Welsh Cob. He is black with a big white blaze, no other white him so does look very Fresiany!!. So cos he is part bred the feathers are off, and he is plaited up. Went to a show today and the judge told her that he should be shown in his natural state as he is a Mountain and Moorland. Now I always thought part breds are plaited and pure breds show natural. Which is correct? It is only local riding club level. Horse is nearly 2 years old.

Was it a part bred M & M class? If so, you would generally expect them to be trimmed and plaited. But then you would also expect them to be a little finer maybe and less hairy looking? As in show pony types are usually part bred welsh.

Maybe you could do a different class with him where he can be shown natural if thats what he looks like he should be? Does he look 'right' plaited up?

Hard to tell without seeing him. Sounds nice though!

Sounds silly but are you sure they knew he was a part bred. Is there any chance people are thinking he's a purebred welsh (albeit not a very typey one). I thougt pb's should be plaited too.

I have two part bred wleshies, which i show locally and I never plait them. I show them in natural state, and have never been told I should do otherwise. I know in theory PB should be trimed and plaited, but I've never had a problem showing them the way i do. Infact people often believe my girl is a purebred...

Technically M&M types are shown unplaited. Much easier on the morning of a show IMO! The fact that he is a part bred won't matter at local level.

Once he grows up you may have to plait for working hunter and classes like that - but not for a few years yet!

Same for me!

If you look in the WPCS website it will state that all part-breds should be shown plaited, but I have never plaited mine for local level and on occasion have had to tell judges that she is part-bred as many seem to think she is purebred.
