I posted recently about my first ever show, which is coming up in 9 days time!!!

We are entering Best Turned Out, doing the gymkhana games, and I've also got some slightly insane idea in my head about doing the Novice Clear Round jumping...

I have now sourced a black jacket, black jods, long black boots, a shirt and a tie. Body protector has been ordered - was going to borrow one but since my fall yesterday have decided I need one of my own!

So first question - I only have a skull cap, not a velvet hat, is that going to look OK for BTO? Or do I need to get a black cover for it? (current cover is very tatty)

This is my main question: How do I properly clean my bridle?

Am doing BTO in hand so not too worried about cleaning my saddle, but do need to get my (cheap leather) bridle sparkling? What do I need and how do I go about it?

BTW, this is only the little yard show BUT it's my first EVER show so it's a big thing to me!
Thanks x

Cleaning bridle.

For BTO take it totally apart and start by cleaning if appropriate shining buckles. Use warm water to remove any grease and dirt from the leather. Don't get too wet use elbow grease. Use a knitting needle or matchstick to ensure all your buckle holes are clean. I use Belvoir tack conditioning spray (something like that) but anything similiar with glycerine in to shne the leather - don't overdo it otherwise it will be sticky.

Also don't forget to make sure the bit is clean.

Good luck and enjoy.

To clean my bridle, I usually first take it apart, I think use warm water and a bit of lemon juice, to help remove any grease. I then use jefferies leather care saddlesoap which usually works a treat.

shouldn't turn out in hand be trousers and shoes/short boots rather than jodhs and long boots?

I would either borrow a velvet hat ot buy a velvet cover for your skull cap

my thighs won't agree with beige jods and can't afford to buy a pair I'll hardly wear! I'm not worried about whether we win or not, just want to enjoy doing all the preparations!

Have you not got a pair of light coloured trousers that you could pop on instead of jodphurs?I know you said you dont care about winning but my theory is if your gonna do it and you've paid an entry you may aswell do it properly. Jod boots or even some smart dark coloured shoes that you can run in would be best.
Its best to wear a velvet hat, but if funds wont allow, a smart black cover to go on your hat will be fine.

Hope you enjoy yourself, let me know how you get on!
Any more questions dont hesistate to ask. Please take loads of piccys!!
