I got a friend who plays poker to come up with the last one I had to name. I am not a regular casino goer so not that good on the terms. I'll try and dig out the email she sent me and I'll copy and paste it in! Poker seems to have some fun terms!

Ahhh, Poker - something I know about!

Ante,
All-in,
Bad Beat,
Big Blind,
Big Slick,
Calling Station,
Check-Raise,
Crying Call,
Dead-money,
Fast-Play,
Gutshot-Straight,
No-Limit,
Overcard,
Overpair,
Pay-off,
Pocket-Pair,
Scare-Card,
Semi-Bluff,
Smooth Call,
Splash the Pot,
Soft-Play,
Split-Pot
Stop-and-go,
On-tilt,
Top set,
Top pair,
Under the gun,

There are mannnnny more, but some would just be daft for a name of a horse! Hope these help!

Why thank you :-)

Yes, Up the Ante is a very cool name. I would love to give a poker-related name to one of my youngsters (seeing as it pays for them!) but I tend to get them at 2 and they always seem to have names. Maybe I need to buy a really baby just for the purpose!! Plus, I dont think my mother would approve - even though I'm a 20-something she still does the horses whilst I'm at vet school and in her Methodist ways does not approve of the 'gambling'... even though it keeps her in field ornaments and something to do!!

Hee hee!! The Splodge beast in my signature is Aces High!!! I bought her as a weanling so able to name her - thankfully!

I really want to be a pro poker player (ok will start as an amateur!!) - how do you get into it? I've only played once with friends but they do a think in the Racing Post about players once a week and it's serious stuff. (Sorry this is off subject!!!)

Oh, don't become a pro unless you are super good because there are alot of complications. My OH is a semi-pro (plays at US open and British open annually but still works as a lawyer in the week) and he is as good as anybody but when you are a 'professional gambler' you have limitations on things like mortgages and things. Plus even the best players get in 'a rut' and so there could be months when you just dont win money - sod's law says they also are always going to be the months when the bills are high and there are lots of birthdays to pay for!!! Hence it is better to keep it as a hobby that pays money and keep a regular income for the banks . But there is bascic rules that allow you to MAKE money rather than loose it. Just being a good player with a mathmatical approach to it. I only play here and there (probably 3 times a week - all online, each one is 2-3 hrs) and last year it payed for me to upgrade my car (3k?) and buy a baby horse :-) . My OH will turn over 15-25 k per year in addition to his 'real' job! So it buys holidays/cars/luxuries. But he does play more frequently than me and at higher stakes. Maybe I should rent him out as a poker coach because he is very understanding and patient?!?! Why not just read up a bit and start up a Full Tilt Poker (google them - they are the best website) account and just play the $1 tornaments to get you going? Thats about £0.50 and will keep you entertained for a while!

If you want any more details PM me - actually, maybe this should have been in a PM itself!

Sorry for thread hijacking - I hope you find a good name for your horse!

Yes, Up the Ante is a very cool name. !!

Hmmm, bit of forethought required perhaps, imagine being announced as "So and So riding Up the Ante" I would certainly grin quietly to myself if I heard that one, sorry;) If the announcer said "...with" or "...and" you'd be OK though, I quite like it though.

I think plain old Casino is good, but actually like Vegas even better just as it is.:)

One of the best names I have ever heard was "Forleg Zanatail" closely followed by a friend and her horse "The Black with a Blaze"!

Good Luck, I am OK with show names but dreadful with barn names, my foal is 9 weeks now and is still nameless:(
