Here is my first ever report. I jump R1 in Switzerland which is the same as BSJA Discovery except there is no BN height here.

First class I had a stop at Number 3 - an innocuous-looking upright but lots of people had stops at it - I needed more impulsion.

Second Class I came 8th out of 40 - clear 1st Phase and 4 faults 2nd Phase. There were only 7 double clears and I was fastest with 4 in the second phase. I was really happy with that. I got a lovely placque for my stable a rossette and 50CHF (about 20 pounds)

I read with interest the posts on 'dumbing down' BSJA & BE. Here we have to start at discovery height and the courses are tricky with lots spooky fillers, ditches etc. 10 - 20% are eliminated every time. I really wonder if this is the best start for young horses (and less experienced riders).

Well done...you did well. The prize money is good out there too !

I remember the days when BSJA started at Disco...I don't recall it being any 'worse' than nowadays...

Do you qualify for second rounds on the basis of DC's over there or is it based on placings ?

Cool well done, its really interesting hearing a report from somewhere else and hearing how you guys do it!

Rambo, I have not figured out 2nd rounds. There are local and regional finals but I don't know how you qualify and I have a feeling they start at R2 (1.1 metre). There is also Amateur competition but that is 1.2m like the old Amateur stuff in Britain. Do you think 10-20% elimination is about the same as in BN & Discovery in the UK? It seems a lot to me but have not lived in UK for 7 years now.

Magic Melon, the plaques are really nice - must better than rosettes. I guess some people run out of space on thier stable but no danger of that for me yet!

Hmmmm....I reckon about 105 ELIM is about the norm in the Uk....it varies from show to show though.

Second rounds are usually at least 10cms higher than the qualifying height too

Do you have unaffiliated where you can prepare or is R1 the lowest level? Sometimes in great long 80+ in the class i think we need more testing courses! but thats not fair on the novices hard to get the balence.
