I have done loads of in hand classes to county level etc successfully with my youngster (mixed M&M; New Forest and New Forest combined in with Connemaras) but would like to try one or two ridden classes and was looking for some advice.

I rode him out in the show saddle and hunter bridle I was hoping to use- but could anyone offer me advice on what I could change- eg noseband width, etc. Also to compliment him what colout jacket- I have got a green one with yellow and burgandy overcheck with a mustardy yellow colour shirt and red tie with gold dots do you think this will be ok? Also, what colour jods should I wear as for the inhand stuff I use trousers- what is the preffered showing colour for ridden M&M's.

He's 4 next month so done very little - will have my first lesson on him this thursday.
Any critique please.

Thank you.

Also stirrup length wise for the ring- ok as they are or up/down? Just trying to get the right overall picture.

Not giving critism here but.... :p
The saddle really tips you back (or seems to in the piccies!) -What a handsome wee boy by the way! Lovely colour.
I think his noseband width is just nice for his head and age just now! Maybe add another 1/2inch to the noseband as he gets older ;)
Your jacket sounds lovely! But blue tweed I think would go beautifully! Pretty sure preferred colour tends to be canary yellow. - honestly I hate it and would wear beige.. but not sure beige would compliment him much.. I think a really light beige or yellow (practically white) would suit him!

All the best with the showing :D

I show new forests too :)

Can't see pics well from my phone, but assuming bridle is flat and plain, my new forest has a 3/4inch noseband.

I like to match my tie to the overcheck on my tweed - so in your case maybe burgendy and yellow?

Green tweed jacket is lovely on greys, make sure its well fitting!

Most people wear canary jods for m+ms.

Thanks for the reply! I hope its just the pictures! I'm going to be honest I have no idea if it does or not as I havent noticed when I've been riding him. I'll have to see if instructor on thursday can see it- if so may have to get saddler out! It was fitted to him but he's probably changed shape.

Yikes- yellow jods- how delightful- I've seen the kids wearing them but hoped I wouldn't have to! Oh well :)

The dreaded yellow joddies..
Have to say- I would never wear them! Personally hate them with Navy tweed.

If you were wearing the --- Canary jods
Go for green :p

Canary jods can look smart:

These are canary (paler than the bright yellow, but undeniably yellow in colour!) and I reckon they look immaculate and very nice.

Your boy looks very nice. Tweed and canary do look good- just be picky about the shade of canary. Al uses hers for all comps and they look nice! I think slightly shorter stirrups maybe?

I would take the martingale / rein stops off.
I cant see what type of rein they are, but make sure it's not the rubber one.

The numnah is cutting a horrible shape into his shoulder. The whole point of a show saddle is to show off the shoulder and allow full movement.
You are sitting too far back, you need to think "should hip heel". The way you are sat is putting your heel into a false shape, without the true stability of your lower leg.

It may be the saddle is wrong for you, but you might have to work more on your position.
Again sitting in a true shape will show your pony's shoulder off more.

I prefer brown tweeds with M&M's, but as long as it's cut well and fits. The whole picture should look better.

-Sorry to be so direct with my answers, but I would rather you focus on the advice than try to unpick it from lots of paragraphs
