Hi
I want to do showing again this year with my arab. I normally do the veteran, best condition or arab classes. last year I sometimes done well and sometimes didnt. I was critised by some judges by them saying he was too lean. What do you guys think? I thought he was a good weight but he is thinner this year than he was last year?

Ah that's better.

Well she is slight - but she is an arab, and I would say she looks perfect.

Why do ALL showing judges insist on fat, obese monsters.

Ignore them.

I agree with Amy Marie, nearly all show judges think horses should be obese; idiots! If you think you have trouble with your arab try owning a cob! Mine was really fit last summer, doing 2-3 hrs a day, competing regularly, looked really lean, muscular and great in my oppinion, the best he'd ever looked. But of course showing judges told me he was too thin! I remember we came second in a ridden cobs class, my boy went much better than the one who beat him, he went beautifully on the bit, forwards and correctly but the one that beat him had little schooling, wasn't properly on the bit just forced into it cos wearing a pelham; why did it win? It was obese! Seriously some show horses make me feel sick, it's not the horses fault itsthe owner and ignorant judges, imposing health risks on the horses just becausethey think it looks nice! I could go on about this subject for hours!

Anyway i think your arab looks lovely, if he goes nicely then there's no reason he shouldn't be placed, and if the show judges say he's too thin f*** them. It's much better to have a horse slightly thin if it's in work then a fatty who'll be prone to laminitis, joint and tendon problems, laziness, sweating and general inability to be an athlete.

I think some could see him as being "lean" because he's got quite a tubular body. He looks great in that photo, though I wouldn't want to see him any slimmer for the show ring (because it will make him look more tubular) but he needn't be bigger either. Building up his topline and muscle (especialy over his neck) will make him look better for showing.

He looks perfect to me, nicely covered! I'm battling with the bulge at the moment - shifting to diet hay and no hard feed as my Arab is looking decidely cobbish.... although I keep getting comments he is now in 'show condition' I will not let him get obese just to please the judges
